Doesn't look too happyThe guy in the back with the black shirt doesn't look like he's in a good mood. He's not joining in with his friends. Maybe he lost out in 'Rock Scissors Paper' (if they even had that game in Germany back then) so didn't get to lead any that day. Or maybe he lost "his girl" to one of the other guys.

Re: Doesn't look too happyThe whole bunch is far too serious. Yet I know (knew) some of the other people in this photo and they weren't like that at all. But then, it was 1938 - serious times, no matter where or what.

Re: Doesn't look too happyThose were serious times indeed - great photo!
My father was born that year and the photos of his youth look very similar (only no mountains to climb in Malta - his are all taken on the shores of the Mediterranean)

Re: FANTASTICThanks! I have a ton more of these and I need to sort through them. Some of them are on other peaks in SummitPost - would be interesting just from the standpoint of conditions (especially snow and ice) then and now. I have some great ones of him with the old ropes and nailed boots and 10 point crampons. We are so spoiled!

Also note the thick ass...climbing rope! That is unbeleiveable. Shows you how dtermined they were to get up the rocks. This is a beautiful area in Saxony, it is really great climbing. Thanks for sharing this 'old school' pic.
