A Grizzly Samples the Wind (or Me)

A grizzly pausing from its foraging near the Polebridge Ranger Station. Much of the time, its head was down as it dug busily for insects or burrowing rodents. The digging action allowed us to witness the movement of its powerful shoulders and gain an appreciation for the tremendous strength of this great animal. Shot with a 200 mm focal length-- you don't want to get much closer than this with flat, open terrain between you and a grizzly bear (which also helps explain the focus and composition of this shot!). Glacier National Park, MT-- July 1998

Good photo Bob. I almost missed it.
Do they have good eyesight too or mostly rely on smells?

Thank you, Anya. I have never heard or read that they have bad eyesight, but they are definitely known for their noses and their ears. I've read that a grizzly downwind of you can pick up your scent from as much as a mile away. Still, by the time one's close enough to be of concern, it's definitely going to see you!

I've added two more now. One is not so great-- too blurry-- but shows a mother and her cubs. The other is better and shows just the cubs. I wish I could help with some pictures for the black bears album, but I just don't have any good pictures of black bears.
