About 1 mile north of Mt Mitchell on the northwest side of Mt. Craig. The view is generally north. Photo taken on the morning of 12/28/02 from the Black Mountain Crest Trail (#179).

Blisters to prove it

E,

An exposed ridge makes for beautiful views, but painfully cold temps.

Especially when fingertips are doused with super-cooled fuel from a failing stove! Live, experience, and hopefully learn.

Re: Nice

I've never taken snowshoes to the Blacks. Most of the trails have very steep climbs and descents and many are badly overgrown. For these and other reasons I'd instead recommend instep crampons or, better yet, 6-pointers. The winter season weather fluctuations can be confounding. Just 2 weeks ago Mt Mitchell reported a temp of -15 plus (or perhaps minus!) winds of 50 mph. Not far away, in the Smokies, there was more than 2 feet of snow on the ground. Jump ahead then to this morning's report and we see a tremendously mild 24-hour low of 42. Go prepared for the more harsh extreme and enjoy!
