Me too !!I love benchmarks and registers. I first look for the benchmark and then for a register. Most peaks have one or the other or both.
Neat album idea.

Re: niceThey're for mapmaking, usually by the US Geodetic Survey. (Most are quite a bit older than GPS -- the Survey started in 1869.) They mark a location used for measurement. Some are placed on summits, some are placed at spots that are visible from the air, some are placed along a clear line of sight to another known location. Some are used to measure position, some are used to measure elevation. People especially like to find and photograph the ones on summits where the USGS has engraved the name and elevation - it's a way of proving you were there.
