Southeast Face Snowclimb
Camped at alpine lake and got snowed on pretty well. Hiked up the gully to the east of the summit towards the valley between merritt and alpine. climbed up a snow chute to the summit ridge and over to the summit. midwinter conditions, which was surprising given that it was summer... great first summit in the sawtooths.

some snow
a few inches of fresh snow from the past 2 weeks added a little to the challenge. Pretty steep hiking up the west slopes. Great Indian Summer day. Could not find a summit register (maybe buried in the snow)

NW Ridge
Fun scramble with my buddy Mike up the NW Ridge for something different, then down SE slopes to the beautiful basin between Alpine and Merritt Peak. I saw the goat beds also and some Pika along the way. I was surprised that there wasn't a summit register given how popular and easy this one is. Comparatively speaking, the rock is pretty solid on the northwest ridge and much of the south to east slopes. We popped out near that lower meadow about 1 mile from the TH. It was windy and chilly for August (55F and cloudy).

West side
Scrambled up the west side from the south end of Sawtooth Lake. There was considerable snow above Alpine Lake, and the first 2/3 of the route was on snow with crampons. The final few hundred feet featured extraordinarily loose scree and talus, but the view from the summit was more than worth it. There were thunderstorms in the area all afternoon, but luckily I was never caught too close. Great peak!
Great intro to the Sawtooths. Shelby and I were blown away by the area. Very rewarding summit, views are amazing. We thought that Sawtooth Lake looked like a small Crater Lake (Oregon).
This was my first Sawtooth summit. Great options for routes up to the peak, and good views at the top. Very fun climb.

Great Vista of Sawtooth & Alpine Lake
Climbed Alpine Peak on the first of a four day backpack trip through the Sawtooths. Great views from the top. A great alternative to Regan for those wanting a slightly easier climb near Sawtooth Lake. My dog also made it to the summit.
Route Climbed: W face from lake Date Climbed: July 2004
Enjoyable hike to Sawtooth lake. From halfway S along the lake just went straight up snow and scree on W face. Great views of Regan and studded ridgeline from Merritt to "Moolack Pk". Nice mountain for those wanting a little more than just a hike.

On a simply gorgeous weekend in the Stanley basin, we bagged Alpine Peak. Left the trailhead at 7:50, and back at 3:10 in the aft. Took about 4 hours to summit. 2:45 down. We took our dogs. They were pretty tired at the summit with some minor bleeding on their feet due to the rocks near the top, but not bad. Beware there are leash laws in the SNRA until Labor day weekend, however once up the trail we let them off. No one that we met on the trailhead seemed to mind - guess it depends on how much you trust your dog to stay with you. Being near the end of summer, this was still the busiest trail I have ever been on in Idaho to date. After getting down, the temps were in the mid 80's in the basin so we drove over, and took a well deserved dip in Stanley lake, with McGown peak as a backdrop. Downed some ice cold suds as we sun dried off.
