loop: up Alta Peak Trail, down through Pear lake date climbed July 2001
I started and finished in the Lodgepole campground, made for a long day. The descent through pear lake was fun.

in a whiteout
It was a struggle but we made the summit on a stormy winter day in a white out. Well worth it as a winter summit.

impromptu climb
After hiking to Alta meadow, made a scramble up the slopes to alta peak before bisecting with the trail leading to the summit. Nice views, was a good warm up for the half dome/clouds rest in a day a week later.

Second Try
Same route, 2wk after my previous attempt. No issues this time thanks to beautiful weather. No register to be found, although hordes of marmots call the summit area home.

Whiteout near summit
Made it to within 100' vertical feet of the summit. Engulfed in fog bank & clouds. Combined with the snow on the ground, this made it impossible to find the true summit blocks. Visibility was near 0 in all directions. I had to follow my own footsteps out.
Figured I had to do this one seeing as everyone else I know has done it. Turned out to be pretty nice on top despite some ominous looking clouds. Hiked it with Rob O who was willing to skip climbing to do this hike.....again!
You and Rob should have gone exploring over at Tharps...."location, location, location!"

Another 24h day - Alta Peak trail
Hiked with Allen (kngalaric). Despite my 50+ hour work week, I decided it would be a great idea to wake up at 3:30am on Saturday and take a day trip up to Alta Peak. Besides the last 2 miles, the hike itself isn't that hard but I was TIRED and dreaded the hike down! Some stomach issues on top of it kind of turned it into torture! The drive back was a battle too! And the day after I worked from noon to 6:30pm. Labor day deserves its name this year!
But... other than that :), it's a great peak with awesome views. I took a lot of pictures of peaks I have yet to figure out what their names are. Allen also posted a trip report:
WOW! Great Sierra views, pretty easy peak to summit
Bruno, Chrissy and I went for another mad Sierra dash. Drive from SoCal, leave at 4AM, hike, summit, return to sender. All in all a great day.

Made snow angels near summit
Day trip from the Bay Area - so beautiful! Was slipping, sliding & sloshing for the final mile since I have no snow technique. Couldn't find the register - probably hidden by the hungry looking marmots at the peak!

Good Job MOM!
Met up with my mom to bag her first peak. She did it. So proud of her... Now to get her on rock...

One of my first peaks
Totally fun hike that was my first summit! We took the Alta trail all the way.
Took my wife and a friend this time. We camped at Pear Lake and then did Alta cross country from Pear Lake the next day. It only took two and a half to three hours at a relaxed pase and most of the climbing was very easy. Only one section was a bit of loose class 3. If you want to do the loop like we did, I definately recommend ascending from pear Lake rather than the Alta Pk trail because coming down the Alta Pk Trail is much more enjoyable than going up it like I did my first time up Alta. I wish we had brought axes because there was still plenty of snow up there to do some snow climbing which would have been even more fun!

Left the car at Wolverton and camped in a boulder field 2,000 feet below summit. Awesome sunset and freezing temps at night. The summit block was really cool and the views of seemingly endless Sierra peaks were amazing.

limited views :-(
Solid snow around Panther Gap, and solid again after Muhrton Meadows. Left the trail and slogged up the west gully instead. Snow's good that way. Clouds obscured most of the views, but the few we caught looked amazing.

I climbed Alta Peak the week after I climbed Mt. Silliman. The trail is not too difficult until the last part where it is sandy. The views of the Great Western Divide and the wildflowers along the way are outstanding!

The whole area was covered in snow and the trail was very hard to find sometimes. We eventually made it to the peak. Absolutely beautiful views of the Sierras from the summit.
