American chestnut burr

American chestnut burr

I found this chestnut tree alongside the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Pisgah Inn. You occasionally find them growing to this size (about 20-25 feet) and producing nuts. The top had died out of this one, but the rest of the tree appeared to be healthy.

The biggest one in the Smoky Mtns Park, a 75-footer near Cades Cove, has just begun to exhibit the first symptoms of the blight. That's about as big as you see them get before they succumb.
