Fire tower
Have visited Apple Pie Hill three times. The most recent time 8/29/2014, the tower was manned and visitors were being allowed into the top to see the equipment, talk with the observer and take in the views.

Snake Eyes
Did this venue last year during the summer. Not to hot, but sunny enough to work up a good sweat hiking on the flat sandy trails. Also took the obligatory climb up the fire tower. We came upon a snake soaking up the rays on the trail. Of course I had to have a picture. So I squated down and started clicking away. Of course I had to push the envelope and had the camaera about 8" from it when he had enough. The snake reared up and puffed its neck, like a cobra and hissed at me. Needless to say I was not quite balanced and quite scared. Next thing I'm on my butt scrambling away from this crazy monster. When I returned home I looked it up as a Eastern Hog Nose Snake, harmless, just irritated by this human blocking its sunshine.

Thanks for the memories
Thanks for reminding me of this nugget. Four of us did a single day traverse of the 40-mile Batona Trail in the spring of 1979. It was a big deal, because NJ had just opened up a new 11-mile section of the trail on the south end. I recall it being a nice day and enjoying the view from the top. Also recall being quite tired at the end :-)
I don't remember the exact date of my ascent. It was during the summer of 2004 when I was hiking the Batona Trail in sections. I brought a Tastykake Apple Pie up there and ate it at the fire tower.

Vaguely remember it
Spent a lot of time in the Pine Barrens. Great place to learn the ways of the woods. Apple Pie Hill is the Pinnacle of the Pines!

Sunsets
Probably my first time up this great New Jersey "mountain". I loved watching sunsets from it.
