Re: Nice photograph ...Larry,
There are...I dunno, 3 or 4 Red Mtns right in this immediate vicinity...they form a sort of Red Mtn. massiff. As for all of Colorado...there are more Red Mountains than one could shake a stick at. It's sort of the "Sugarload Mtn syndrome".

Red Mountain #1There are 3 Red Mountains, with #1 being the northernmost, just north of Corkscrew Pass 4WD road. #2,#3 are just south, then Mcmillan Peak, Ohio Peak, and Anvil Mountain... all NW of Silverton, and all RED thanks to the massive weathering of huge pyrite bodies into iron oxides. So many folks think photos of the Red Mountains are falsly colored somehow. Boy, are they missing out on seeing the real thing, eh! Yours is really a nice photo from the crest.. and accurate color.

Re: Red Mountain #1Thanks, gliderman. I love the San Juans - living on the Front Range, though, I just can't seem to get to the San Juans often enough. A visit there is a very special treat!
