Backbone Mountain
Started the day in Norton, VA and drove through West Virginia to get to the trailhead. Very nice evening hike. Well-marked trail. Nice summit. Mailbox, register, and certificates for hikers who complete this HP. HP #13.

climbed normal route from West Virginia
This was my 2nd of 3 state highpoints in one day and my eighth state highpoint overall. Great weather for early spring!
Route Climbed: Standard route Date Climbed: September 1, 2002
Highpoint #12. Headed out before dawn while the family slept at the hotel. Very foggy; surprised to find people camped at the summit. You gotta love any state that has a town called "Accident."
Route Climbed: Normal Trail to the summit Date Climbed: November 16, 2003
My wife and I climbed this mt. to the occassional rifle shot going off in the mountains around us. It's hunting season so wear bright colors. This was my 5th HP and my wife's 4th. The trail is fairly easy to follow, but at one intersection a few four wheeler trails all come together and it isn't marked well to see which to take. Other than that, a nice day with a little bit of a view since there were no leaves on the trees.
Route Climbed: Standard West Face Date Climbed: May 2003
A very nice spur-of-the-moment state highpoint. The path is easy to find thanks to the orange blazes and, despite the logging debris, it's a surprisingly entertaining and pretty hike. Took all of an hour or two. Very nice.
Route Climbed: Marked Highpointer Trail Date Climbed: October 12, 2003
My friend Michael, and I climbed this mountain as part of my state highpoint quest. I enjoyed the nice easy hike to the summit and enjoyed the unexpected view to the east. The Highpointers club did a nice job of marking the trail.
