Route Climbed: PCT ridge trail from Islip side Date Climbed: 10/20/2001
Great hike-bagged lots of peaks today: Middle Hawkins, Mt Hawkins, Throop Peak, Mt Burnham, Mt Baden-Powell and finally Mt Islip. Lots and lots of sites to see on this great excursion. Started from saddle conduit at 2 from up from Jimmy CG access road. Highly recommended outting (by me). :-)
Did this my first time in winter while thru hiking the PCT in 1980. Since then I have run or hiked it numerous times from Vincent Gap, Islip Saddle, Crystal Lake, and Dawson Saddle. I always enjoy the 2000+ year old Limber Pines near the top, too. They are the closest thing we have to the Bristlecones here in Southern California.
Route Climbed: Vincent Gap Date Climbed: Feb 1, 2004
Yep...very long day. Snow conditions were crappy down low for hiking (4"-12" powder over icy base). Nearer the summit, excellent for crampons. Best views of the Edwards AFB I've seen in a while. We could see all the way to San Gorgonio.
Route Climbed: dawson saddle down vincent gap Date Climbed: dec 22 03
I climbed with fellow SPer Tonyo and had a great time. Not as much snow as I had hoped but nice anyway. We could see snow peaks in the southern sierra.
Route Climbed: Vincent Gap Date Climbed: Dec. 20, 2003
Summited with my Daughter. Most of the snow has melted off. Hope we get some more soon. The mountain was in the clouds all day. Cold, wet and windy but it's beautiful up there in any weather.
Route Climbed: Vincent Gap Date Climbed: November 15, 2003
Conditions were excellent, about 2-3 ft of snow. Crampons are helpful when going straight up the mountain. I think it's a tradition to steal the summit log, so I put a new one up there (spiral notebook); hopefully it stays up there. I guess I'll have to check, which gives me another excuse to climb this mountain again!
Route Climbed: Vincent Gap, Islip Saddle Date Climbed: several times over 20 yrs
I've been here several times over the past 20 years. The first time was on a Boy Scouts long-term training hike - we hiked in from Vincent Gap, spent the first night near Lamel Spring, summited the next day, then hiked along the ridge to Little Jimmy CG, then out to Islip Saddle on the third day.
Spent the night on the summit once. My partner brought a can of chili for dinner, which he insisted he cook inside the tent. He then spilled the chili all over the floor of the tent. Next morning, while we were packing, a small group of bicyclists arrived on the summit after poaching the PCT.
Nice trail, great weather and the 360 degree view from the top is better than Baldy. Made it in 4 hours roundtrip with a 30 minute stop at the summit. First time up.
Route Climbed: Vincent Gap Date Climbed: June 22, 2003
This was a great trip, my first in many many years (16?). I guess that I am out of shape after reading that one guy did this climb in 2 hrs. roundtrip in knee deep snow. It took me 5 hrs. roundtrip and I was exhausted when I got back to the car. It was absolutely beautiful to hike this mountain. I really enjoyed the great views!
Route Climbed: Dawson Saddle, Throope Pk, Baden-Powell, Vincent Gap Date Climbed: March 17, 2001
I am not entirely certain about the date climbed. What I am certain about is the weather on that day. It started out partly cloudy and breezy. While on the ridge between Throope and Baden-Powell the wind started gusting at what I can honestly estimate to be over 80 mph. My brother Joe and I had to crouch down at times to keep our balance against the wind. much of the time the visiblilty was near zero. We reached the cloud shrouded summit and immediately started down toward Vincent Gap. It was then that the rain started. We arrived at my brothers truck as planned, soaked but exhilerated.
