Sunrise Climb
Climbed this mountain with our Rayado crew. We slept at the Copper Park Parking Lot. Which is the small clearing labeled at 11,574 ft. We left camp at 3:30 in the morning and took the incredible summit ridge up to the top. Being on that exposed ridge guided by your headlamp and the moon was absolutely incredible. Once we got to the top it was probably 40 degrees, and we sat there for about an hour in our sleeping bags waiting for the sun to peak its head out. It is an experience I will never forget!
Our crew started hiking at 4:00 am from Maxwell Camp and summitted Baldy by late morning. Exceptional vistas from the top! We made the hike a 20-mile loop by adding on a visit to French Henry and Baldy Town.

Philmont Trek 08-02N
This was one of my first peaks I ever summitted and a fond memory looking back on now.
My first time beyond 12,000 feet. 1971 trip was beautiful weather and we slid down some snow filled ravines. My first glissade on an old Korean era army poncho my dad gave me. 1972 was windy and overcast.

Climbed it in summer 1995, either July or August, I can't remember. Stayed on top for at least half an hour. It was a grey, cloudy day but storms never developed.
Fairly long hike in from Miranda camp, scree slope on the northern face of the mountain was a great joy to run down, I couldn't imagine climbing from that face. Storm blew in at 14:00, almost on the dot, crew was safe and off the peak by then.

Twice Climbed
The first time I went up Baldy we had a chance to eat lunch and I had a great time, the second time was considerably harder as we had already hike 10 miles + before even starting to climb baldy. Rayado... You have to love it :)

Second Time
Climbed it solo (I am a ranger at Philmont) from Pueblano up through French Henry then the switchbacks to the ridge. Met some cool crews along the way. Started at 8am, summited at 12:30...Stayed about 45 minutes before a sudden storm brought down loads of hail on me. Went to Baldy Town on the way down. It was pouring rain the whole way back to the Ponil Turnaround. Great day and I am glad I got to spend more time up there then last time. This was my first 12'er in 07
Great hike, I loved it! It was my first real peak. Once past the treeline, there was scree all the way to the top. It was sometimes slow going on the scree, but that seemed to do a good job of reducing the effects of AMS in some of the other hikers. I really enjoyed the view, but sadly we were unable to stay at the summit for more than about 20 minutes due to the fact that a thunderstorm was heading our way. I would love to go to Philmont and do it again!
climbed baldy on my second philmont expedition! easy trail from camp until treeline where scree led us to the summit. rained on the way down and water flooded the trail.
