Re: climb in winter

Hello Miguel,
Unfortunately I have to inform you that the Tatras national park, on the slovak side only, is closed during winter, from November 1st to June 15th. It sounds a bit unfair, but during most of this time, the area is very avalanchous, especially the mountain of Baníkov.
However, if you really want to go to the Tatras in the winter, you can either choose to hike on the Polish trails, which are still open (but not all of them can be safe, better keep to the western Tatras), or, if you really want to climb Baníkov, to hire a mountain guide, which is a bit costy for one person only (they can take up to 4). But I would choose another place than Banikov, rather the area of Sivy Vrch.
As for mountain rescue, you have all information on the page of the Western Tatras:

In winter, another better idea would be to hike in the Nizke Tatry, or Mala Fatra/velka Fatra

climb tatras

Hi visentin,
first of all, thanks a lot for your fast reply. you really have a lot information about this range here in summit post, which is excellent!
well, im planning in going study for a whole year to slovakia, to zilina, in erasmus. i guess i ll have time for some climbs there.
i hope you dont mind i do some more questions to you..i would be very thankful, because you really give good answers.
well..once that the Tatras national park is closed during winter and the only way is to climb with a certified guide, do you know where i can find information about the cost? humm.. is there any nearby mountain that you recommend to climb mostly in the winter/spring season?

Re: climb tatras

Hello Miguel,
Thanks for your message. I am french but I live in Poland some 400km to the Tatras so I have the chance to know them.
You are lucky to move to Zilina for a year, if you like outdoors and mountains it's a fantastic place with many possibilities, not only in the Tatras. Just nearby you have the Mala Fatra, which is often said to be the finest mountains of Slovakia out of the Tatras. You must visit the Vratna valley, the mountain Rozsutec and its canyons (but open in summer only too; rest of Mala Fatra all year). Velka Fatra, also nearby, is less mountainous but wider and more desertic. I recommend you the ridge walk from Rakytov to Ostredok via Borisov and the nice hut there, starting from the valley of Revuce. I can give you more info if you need, if you'd like we can exchange by mail or skype.
As for the Tatras, a guide costs around 4000-5000 per day for the cheapests. But, thinknig back, I am not sure if the whole area near Sivy Vrch is closed..
The list of winter closures is here: http://www.tanap.org/en/tracks.php
But nothing about this very area, we need to inquire more about it ! There is an excellent slovak hiking site with an english category in the forum on which you can ask questions, people are very helpful and competent there: www.hiking.sk / http://hiking.sk/hk/li/forum-english_forum.html
Coming back also to the possibility to hike in Polish Tatras in winter, it's not so far from Zilina: you need to drive to Dolny Kubin then Trstena and cross the border at Sucha Hora. There you can either hike in the valleys Dolina Chocholowska or Koscieliska:
