Route Climbed: Johns Brook Trail to Shorey to State Range Date Climbed: July 21, 2004
Hiked with the brother and sister on this jaunt. Finally, good weather after a week of hiking in the rain and fog!
Parked at the Garden, and camped out next to the brook along the junction with the trail to Big Slide. Took the Johns Brook Trail, then the Shorey Shortcut to the Range Trail. The Shorey Shortcut is quite a bit of work for a "shortcut." Headed up the Range Trail to Basin, then onto SaddleBack and back down the Ore Bed.
Invented, or maybe discovered, a great new trail meal: warm chili inside a pita pocket. Delicious.
Route Climbed: From Saddleback Date Climbed: August, 2003
Climbed from Saddleback on our way to Haystack. Ended up in a giant cloud with about 10 feet of visibility. Had to coax our slightly hypotermic companion off the summit (he was really dusted that that point).
Route Climbed: ADK Range Trail Date Climbed: Sep 2, 2001
The section of trail between Saddleback and Basin is one of the roughest sections of trail in the Adirondacks. The great views are the reward for the effort needed for all this scrambling. It takes almost an hour to get from Saddleback to Basin unless you are in much better physical shape than I.
Route Climbed: From Johns Brook Lodge, via phelps and shorey shrot cut Date Climbed: July 20, 2002
A rugged and steep ascent up this great mountain. One of the best views in the Park (for my money). A mostly bare summit and perfectly clear warm day made the views to nearby Marcy, Haystack, Saddleback and Gothics quite a sight.
We were alone on the summit for about 45 minutes. Also traversed Saddleback and Gothics the same day. A nice, but tough, hike over some of the steeper trails in the High Peaks. A must see for any true Adirondack Hiker. A much more remote and isolated hike then some of the more popular mountains, which makes it all the more attractive.
