View in original format! I love this mountain! The beautiful Bison Peak in mid December at sunset. Where's the snow? Bison Peak's awesome summit plateau gets hammered by the same windy weather that keeps the big 14er Mount Evans clean of snow. Colorado's Lost Creek Wilderness.

Bison in winter

Nice shot. Bison is on my list this winter and I was thinking of talking my son.

How is it in winter? Lots of tough trail breaking or is it windblown or with a packed trail?

PS, I just got a whole lot (several hundred!) great photos of the Elk Mountains in the past five days. The peaks were cloaked in winter glory. Make sure to check out CO's what's new page in the next few days. Since you like the Elks you should enjoy them.

What's up Scott.

Bison would make a great winter hike for you and your son. Bison's standard Ute TH route gets a lot of sun and tends to melt out quick. Its about 4.5 miles of class 1 hiking to the plateau and I suppose you need snowshoes for about 2 miles of that approach. Once up on the plateau you can ditch the slowshoes. The grade of the hike is nice and never gets very steep. Zero avy danger. There's just enough winter traffic that its likely the snowpack along the route will be consolodated. I'm guessing Bison gets about 1-2 ascents a month in winter so postholing in a few of the shady areas shouldn't be to bad at all.

Thanks for the info. I think we'll try the third weekend in Feb.
