This was an easy hike from the lake. I wanted to start out early, like daybreak, but I was talking to the ranger the day beforehand while in Custer State Park, and he advised not to do that because there was reportings of mountain lions in the area this year. So I followed his advise, and got a late start for me (9am) It was partly cloudy on the top, so there was limited views, still it was very nice. On the way down there was LOTS of people heading up. I mean like maybe 50 or so! My gosh I guess this one is popular.

A great hike!
After hiking up the Little Devils Tower, we continued on Trail 4 to the top of Harney Peak. The hike took us through moving clouds, with lots of breezy cool mists. Many other hikers were on the trail, and we got the chance to visit with a few. The hike from the Little Devils Tower took about an hour. Spectacular views!

Harney Peak
Climbed with my wife and son Ryan. Nice hike with spectacular views of Custer State Park. Took 1.5 hours to climb and we had the summit to ourselves. Spent an hour on top. Camped at Sylvan Lake. HP #22.

Highpoint # 27
3-year anniversary date for climbing Harney Peak. It was beautiful! I was up & down in 4 hours, including spending over an hour at the summit. Several mountain goats were up there, getting highpoint credit as well. It's not too difficult of a hike, and the scenery is amazing! Rains came after I got down. Lucky me.

Found Sylvan Lake; what a nice place to stay;
We almost ran out of water on the way up;
I had to get down and get some more before getting to the top!!

Sylvan Lake
One of my first summits with my dad, thanks dad for teaching me most of what i know about the outdoors
ran up to the summit. coming down, I was slowed by a horse carivan. the young cowboy said I may as well stay behind, since horses are faster than hikers. I asked to pass and was finishing my lunch at the T.H. when he arrived with his guided clients. maybe he'll think twice before saying those words again to a hiker.

Picturesque hike
What a cool hut in the end. Was a little warm even in May. I was glad I wasn't around when it started hailing in Rapid City the next day though.
This is an easy hiking trail for families, that gets steep enough at the end for kids to say they "climbed a mountain." We hiked at dusk in the summer, so the crowds were small but there was plenty of "evidence of horse use."
