fun hike, a good trail to train on, Monte Bello just takes a little longer to get to than the other hiking areas in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Monte Bello trail run
did a 5 mile RT trail run via Canyon Trail/Bella Vista and returned via Indian Creek. never been here before. trails seem mellow for mountain biking and i'll probably return as i'm just getting my biking legs back...

Black Mountain (Trail Run)
It is a great trail run, especially early in the morning. I once came across a mountain lion, about a year ago. I am stiil trying to improve my run time. So far it is 45 min from the paring lot to the top of the peak.

So apparently the sun will burn you if you don't wear sunscreen... why didn't anyone tell me?! Slather up for this one even if it looks cloudy in the morning, you'll be glad later. mmmm aloe vera :)
Hiked up this one a few times when I first came out to the Bay Area--probably in the summer '98, because I didn't know any better at the time. That was a few years ago, but I should go back sometime to refresh my memory of the place.

I WAS SUCCESSFLU!
To quote, "Hiked from Rhus Ridge Parking lot. A little warm in the sun, yet twas pleasantly cool under the canopy of the oak forests. Took 3.5 hours round trip."

Well worth a Saturday
Good workout, good views, and easy on the joints when started from the Rhus Ridge parking lot.
Climbed multiple times, usually from Monte Bello following White Oak/Canyon/Indian Creek trails. This is not the shortest/easiest way to the top, but it is a good training hike. The Indian Creek trail can be brutal in the summer due to lack of shade, so bring lots of water and sunscreen!

Rhus Ridge>Black Mtn. Trail
Hiked from Rhus Ridge Parking lot. A little warm in the sun, yet twas pleasantly cool under the canopy of the oak forests. Took 3.5 hours round trip.
I can't believe I'm signing this, but what the hell ... I hike or ride up this thing nearly every week for training. From the Rhus Ridge trailhead it's a hike of about 9.6 miles / 2400' elevation gain, and from Stevens Creek Canyon it's about 20-odd miles by bike on pavement, fire road, and singletrack, probably similar elevation gain. Lots of good trails in this area.
I've been up most of the local "peaks" in the bay area and don't bother signing summit logs for them, but I seem to spend a lot of time on my way up & down this one :)

Hot Hike!
I hiked to the top of Black Mountain on a day that was simply too hot for it. I was surprised to see several people hiking up wearing long pants. I made my own miscalculation about the amount of fluids I brought, and ended up running out at the top. This was the first time I had summited this peak in over 10 years, but the last time was on a mountain bike.
I have hiked this hill from several trail heads. There is even a road up to within a mile or so from the summit. In college and high school, we used to go up there at night and drink beer and all that fun"juvenile" stuff... There is even a camp site with running water (not potable though) that lies another few miles down the Trail/fire road at the top...
