Black and Red
Black Mountain (true summit) first, then Red Mountain on a beautiful, sunny February day with Maddie. It had rained the day before, so the terrain had a brilliant green tint to it. The off-trail section after the overlook is an easy extra 45 minutes worth of effort. Red Mountain was less impressive, but was loaded with 20 plus sheep! The real highlight of this trip was the trail though. It felt like a classic national park trail, switchbacks and all. Thanks CCC!

Just the overlook
Not marking "successful" since I didn't make it to the true summit marked on SP's map... Views at the overlook were great, though, and well worth the effort; beautiful light through the clouds.

1st time to top of true summit
I have been to the end of the "Black Mountain Overlook" trail (as referred to on the trail signage) several times over the years. On November 22, 2012 I decided to hike over to the true summit of Black Mountain with my nephew, Matthew. My daughter, Tori opted to stay at the top of the overlook where the trail ends with her dog who doesn't do well on cross-country desert mountain terrain.

Red and Black
It was cloudy and raining in the higher peaks around Las Vegas and I looked in the local guidebook and found this hike. I went to Red Mountain first and then hiked over to Black Mountain. The River Mountains have a good view of Lake Mead.

Black
Kimberly wanted to take a tour of the Hoover Dam in the evening, so we decided to do a hike nearby to that location. Climbing Red and Black Mountains in the River Mountains near Boulder City looked interesting, so Kessler, Shaylee, Kimberly and I decided to climb those. We opted for the longer of the two standard routes since it would provide a good workout.
It was a beautiful day and we made our way through the maze of trails until we were in the canyon leading up to the saddle between Red Mountain and Black Mountain. It was a pretty trail and after reaching the saddle, we opted to climb Red Mountain first. There was some new development at the top (zip line) so we went over to climb the more pristine Black Mountain.
After enjoying the great views of Las Vegas and Lake Mead from the summit of Black Mountain, we hiked back down to the trailhead.
