Hiked solo through the snow and ice to reach the summit. Views were subpar due to fog and clouds but it was great to get out in GA in winter conditions.
Route Climbed: AT from Byron Reece Date Climbed: October 16, 2005
Hauled my four-year-old nephew up the lower slopes with the help of his 16-year-old brother. Once he saw the views, he began to take charge. Great day, beautiful weather, and we actually could see the Atlanta skyline!
Not a cloud in the sky all day. More views from top of this mountain than along the entire AT south of Blood. Reached the top on a Saturday, and it was swarming with people. Shelter was pretty manky.
A GA friend who lives and hikes the GA- AT trails killed a rattle snake that was in the center of the trail because he thought it might bite his dog. I was not impressed. All happened before I could offer my alternative, simply move the snake off the trail. It was a good size rattler.
Would have done a lot of hiking here in the 1990's, but was just back for a visit.
Route Climbed: Appalachian Trail Date Climbed: Feburary 1997
This was the first summit that my wife and I made together. We backpacked up and ran out of water. We sucked ryme ice off of leaves to hydrate on the way down. I have climbed this mountain many times since to train for the Cascade Volcainos.
Route Climbed: From Bryon Reece Trail head Date Climbed: Sept 5 2003
Hit the trail head around 5:45 in the evening. Kinda hazy this evening, so the views from the top weren't great, but the sun was coming through the clouds in very cool patterns while I hung out at the summit for a bit. 50 minutes up and 40 minutes back down. Weather was very pleasant for hiking - 70's with relatively low humidity.

This is the first butt buster you come to going northbound on the AT. Geez, that was a long time ago...

Route Climbed: AT northbound
Hit this one on my 2000 AT thruhike and stayed in the shelter. Beautiful summit and I really liked the cabin although it is a bit beat up - like I was.
Route Climbed: AT from Neels Gap Date Climbed: 10.26.2002 - 2 AM EST
Summited in dense clouds / fog @ 2 AM EST on Saturday. There were 5 guys (in headlamps) in total that summited (Clay, Ryan, Mark, Eric, & Bryan). Had a great time hiking up the mountain. Saw some people w/ a bear bag directly over the tent - made us laugh. Views would have been better in the day & no clouds.
