Brokeoff Trail
Drove up from Nevada City. Nice trail all the way to the summit. Took 2:40 round trip, including 20 minutes on the summit. Climbed Lassen later in the day and then hit up Sierra Nevada brewery in Chico.

CA County HP #32
Late afternoon splitboard lap up Brokeoff. Cloudy day kept the snow in rideable condition for this time of day. Summit just barely hidden in fog, but great views down into the Central Valley, which was a sight to see whilst shredding soft snow turns on the south face of the upper part of the mountain.
Got to the trailhead about 7:45 am. Nice views from summit. Passed another guy right as I began heading down, but that was the only person I saw on the trail.

All to myself
This was part of a trip pursuing county high points for an itinerary that ended up (adaptability and all that) including Modoc, Lassen, Siskiyou, Lake/Colusa, Glenn, Mendocino, Butte, Tehama, Humboldt, & Trinity counties. (As it happens, Siskiyou -- Mt. Shasta -- was the primary objective on this tour, and it was the only unsuccessful summit attempt.)
I was the only one to park at the trailhead and saw no one. I got my start a little before 7:00 p.m., so I knew I would be finishing in the dark, but catching the sunset from the summit was quite appealing.
Trail crews have already clearly been at work here, as some sizable logs have been cut on the trail. There were also a few footprints on the many snow crossings. None of these were anything to worry about, and I never felt the need to don my microspikes. The first stream crossing is shallow but muddy, and a number of sticks have been laid across the braided wetland. The 2nd stream crossing shortly thereafter had a thin snowbridge that I have no doubt has collapsed by now. Virtually everyone before me seemed to know to jump over it.
Once out of the trees, the views were incredible. Ancient cinder cones, now overtaken by forest. Lassen only presented herself when I was just about on the summit, and the in-your-face views were fantastic, especially with the alpenglow. I found a survey marker but no register. Shortly after I was back in the trees it was time to put on the headlamp.
2:00 up; 1:30 down.

Great climb
Mt. Lassen was closed so we did Brokeoff instead. Hiked up with my Dad and we basically had the mountain to ourselves.

Snowboard descent
Hiked up in snowboard boots and trekking poles, then snowboarded down to the south of the ascent route. Beautiful views and some fun turns on the descent.

Best winter snowshoe summit
The very next January found me on this summit in snowshoes. If you want maximum bang for your buck on a winter climb this is your peak. I have lost count of the times I have snowshoed/cramponed up this amazing peak in winter. The effort is far, far less than the reward. Do it!

Highly recommended
A ranger recommended this one to avoid the crowds. Definitely didn't see many people, and the landscape you travel through is gorgeous. This was one of my first peaks, so I thought it was pretty challenging at the time.

Main Trail
Nice summer day for this enjoyable hike. Views were impressive.
Last attempt at Brokeoff was about 13 years ago in the winter and sketchy snow conditions turned us around. Nice to come back for an easy on trail summer hike.
Straightforward class 1 trail to top, 7.7 miles RT per my GPS with about 2700 feet of gain. Only a few parties on the trail as compared to the dozens on Lassen, fine views from summit. Bottom half is forested with several streams, top half more rocky and exposed to the sun. Some snow patches remain, but no trouble. RT was about 3:20. Full TR is HERE
