Late winter summit
Nice variable weather day, big flakes on & off due to temps hovering around freezing...meant snow was nice up high but heavy down toward the hwy. Extra summit lap. 2 groups of a few people skiing out.

Stormy Saturday Skin
Cale & I started not terribly early from the snowed in FS-3601 which is just a pull-off in the heart of winter. Snow pounding but huge flakes and not crazy cold. Skinned down said road to some junctions with a wooded view of Lake of the Woods and many snow-machiners, then eventually up through the wooded east face of Brown, pretty steep approach in feet of powder but finagled our way up. Saw single snow-machine tracks west of summit. The unrelenting storm and losing daylight, decided not to ride down the steep open north face, instead got some tree turns down the east side again. Roundtrip was maybe 4 hours? Would be sweeter on sunny day or early springtime.

East Slopes
Parked on FR 3640 and hiked crosscountry through forest and over mostly firm talus.

Lots of fresh snow
A nice snowshoe up from the summit snow park with around 8" of fresh snow. A little cloudy at times, but mostly beautiful conditions and great views of McLoughlin.

Rocks
Route: Easy Side Cross-Country
This was pretty much straight-up talus climbing the entire way. GREAT views from the top, though, especially of McLoughlin (you'll have to summit and then climb slightly down the north side of the mountain to get a good view).
Unless you like hopping on rocks for hours on end, though, I'd recommend trying this mountain out in the winter, maybe with snowshoes.

Brown Mt Rocks
If you love rocks, you'll love Brown Mountain. I came in from the Lake of the Woods side and pretty much ran strait up the boulder fields then back down. Round trip was less than 2 hrs, but that was as fast as I could go. I wish I had done this one in the winter.

Sunny on top
Pat and I headed out from the Summit Sno-Park on snowshoes in windy, snowy weather at 0745. We went up the north side and reached the summit at 1045, where we stripped down to T-shirts and had lunch in the sunshine above the storm. We were back to the car at 1:00.

lava rock scramble
scrambled up the lava rock from the east. slow going... a pain in the a@# really. obviously this would be much better once it's completely covered in snow, but I still wanted to knock it out since I was there.
