Capitol Gorge & Grand Wash
Did a couple easy family hikes of Capitol Gorge and Grand Wash after picking up some yummy pies at the Gifford Homestead. The scenery is top-notch (very similar to Zion Canyon), but without all of the crowds.

family camping trip
Took the young family here for a car camping trip. Did some small hikes, hung out in the Fruita campground, great little park.
It wasn't part of the original plan, but ended up stopping in and hiking the Upper Muley Twist loop. Thats fun- good views! A week later ended up driving through part of Cathedral Valley. Nice park

Step to the Spare
Ran out of things to do in Goblin Valley, realized Capitol Reef was an hour down the road. Did the trip ad-hoc and on the fly without map or internet. It was great right up until I got heat exhaustion and hallucinations . Then it was just okay.
Couple of quick notes: Camping fills up early but there is a buttload of dispersed BLM sites immediately outside (east) on Notam road. Seriously. Found a site in under 4 minutes.
Visitor center Closes early.
Didn't see anyone charging anything to get into the park
Hikes are great. Just pick one.
Bring water. Yeah. That's a biggie.

My wife and I headed down here after Memorial Day. Since it was our first trip, we stuck to the Fruita area. Many great vistas. A hidden gem is the viewpoint on the Old Wagon Road Trail. Great panorama of the Waterpocket Fold.

Underappreciated Marvel
Went down to the Field Station with an educational group and mostly just hiked around. We arrived then hiked to some petroglyphs and water tanks at night on Mon., then to Hickman Bridge and the Rim Overlook on Tues., then the Fremont River trail and to a some petroglyphs and Pleasant Creek in the valley below the station on Wed., then packed up and left Thurs. morning. This is an amazing and magical place, with some of the best scenery anywhere, and the stars are simply indescribable. Would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for solitude and unparalleled natural beauty.
So much to see in this area. Like a couple of other Utah parks, if you've been to all the places listed in the park literature, you've only scratched the surface.
Plenty to do here. Favorite areas include Wolverine Petrified Wood area, the main southbound road in the park, and most especially the magnificent Burr Trail road running from near Ticaboo Resort over Waterpocket Fold and on to Boulder, Utah.

Utah scenery!
Another beautiful Utah Nat'l Park, which is often overlooked in favor of Bryce and Zion. I was here as a kid with the family. We visited every Nat'l Park in the four corner region, and it shaped my view of the Nat'l Park system in general. I will visit again sometime soon.

Amazing geological formation
Camped at Fruita, which was a bit of a surprise for me. But on the following day, had to high-tail it from there due to diluvian rain. I was one of the last ones out on Utah HWY 12 before they shut it down in both directions. Water was storming out of the mountains

The Reef
I've made numerous trips to Capitol Reef, this being my favorite of all the red rock parks in Utah because it is the least visited. I have been north, south, east and west in the park and have done several of the hikes and a some of the slot canyons and yet I feel like I've hardly seen the place. A friend and colleague of mine is the great grandson of Elijah Behunin, one of the first settlers in the region and the builder of the Behunin cabin that still sits in the park.

Beautiful
Hiked around the park for a few days! Incredible. Check out Sulpher canyon!!
Done a lot of things here...George Benchmark, Halls Creek Narrows, Brimhall Bridge, Muley Twist Canyons, Sheets Gulch, Capitol Gorge, Hickman Bridge, Cohab Canon, Cathedral Valley and more. Still need to do Poe Canyon, Burro and Cottonwood Washes, Ferns Nipple, The Castle, EPH Hanks Tower and Chimney Rock!
