Made It!
Climbed alone on 5/16/2018. Not a cloud in the sky, 5 mph wind on top. Parked at 3.2 miles up from FR100, hard switchback to the Right looked impassable so that is as far as I got. Climbed to 9,000' meadow then up the West side to the Crux. Lost my bearing on the way down, missed the 4WD trail and wend all the way down to FR100. Ran out of water, 1.5 miles back up to the trailhead then 3.2 miles back up to the Jeep. Poor planning but I made it. What an incredible View!!

Cerro Pedernal
Awesome day hike! FR100 was clear. Had my high clearance vehicle and got about another 1.5 miles on FR160 saving FR hiking. Only some snow patches in shaded areas but 160 is still rutted. Weather was perfect. No wind below the summit. Only about 10mph uptop. Plenty of cairns marking the trail on the way up. Found the old Juniper tree and the wood pole against the cliff wall easily. I didn’t see any white arrow on the rock wall, but when you find the pole, you’re there. It’s the only place to climb safely. The summit views are spectacular! We chose to go down the scramble without our packs; used a rope to lower them. I highly recommend this for safety- especially if it’s your first time. Tons of loose rock all the way up and down, no way around it I could find. Well worth the effort. A treat to hike this in January!!!

I decided to take along my girlfriend's cousins's black Lab with me on this hike...let's just say she isn't in the best of shape, and that the 4wd road wore her out. I was the only human around, so I had no choice but to turn back near the bottom the of the main cone of the peak. I'll be back though.

Fun day hike
Lots of fun zones: slow four-wheeling up the approach road, steep climb through trees, flat pleasant meadow, hopping around loose scree, the four-step crux (if you can climb a 10ft ladder, you can climb this), a nice walk along the summit ridge finished by a beautiful view.

Temolime Canyon
Grew up in Los Alamos, so this was good to finally get up there! Scenery is amazing and the long summit plateau offers great vantage points.

done!
Totally fun and spectacular mountain with a great summit. A bit of a chilly wind this time of year. I would be hard pressed to call the crux class 4. Just a stiff and short class 3.
