Via Whitehouse Ridge trail  Sucess!

This was a fairly strenuous hike, as much of the elevation profile tended to head straight up the mountain on old use firer roads - disregarded the thought of switchbacks but oh well ! The sign post at the bottom that indicates Chalk Mountain is 9 miles is also wrong (more like 7 miles). There are beautiful views coming up the first ridge, as well as later on in the hike where the trail pops out on a steep open/sandy ridge. Other parts of the trail actually remain quite level under the tree line. The conditions of the trail at this time are fine, there are just several down trees and washed out fire roads due to all the rain this winter, but nothing impassible by all means. Make the hike up to Chalk Mountain and bring plenty of water - You'll be very glad you did !

Whitehouse Ridge  Sucess!

I enjoyed this place very much. I liked the routes two parts, the switchback climb up to elevation through the forest, and the open-air stroll along Chalks Road to the top. The view overlooking the ocean and Ano Nuevo is swee-eet.
How I got to the trailhead: Traveled to Half Moon Bay, Turned South on Hwy 1, traveled to 3.5 miles south of Pigeon Point Road and turned Left onto unmarked dirt road just .1 mile past the left turn into Costanoa Lodge/KOA Campground, then went 2.3 miles to wide spot in the road with a small sign on right indicating No Public Access.

From Park HQ  Sucess!

From the Park HQ, took the Sunset trail to Berry Creek, then followed an old trail (no longer maintained but it was easy to follow) up to Whitehouse Road which leads to the summit. Distance was a bit over 15 miles RT, with 4500 ft of elevation gain, there are a lot of ups and downs on this route. TR is HERE.

Whitehouse trail  Sucess!

I greatly enjoyed this hike through a nice redwood forest then diverse costal plants higher on the ridge.

Whitehouse Ridge  Sucess!

Ran out of time on the West Ridge Trail, so came back four days later by the easier route. Swell views to the coast from the summit. Trip Report

Re: via Whitehouse Ridge Trail

Funny! It was so foggy here in Santa Cruz yesterday, I was thinking it was a good thing we did the hike on Saturday. Did the fog burn off enough for you to get any views?

You know, everything I could I read about this hike says the trail is very lightly used. But there were two other parties on the day we hiked up there. Anyway, now I want to set up a shuttle for a Whitehouse Ridge Trail-Chalk Mountain-Westridge Trail Hike.
