Little did I know I would get this into state highpoints.
I was close to a breaking point at work and my wife chased me out the door to get away.
Figured I had only 3 left east of Colorado, so I hit it: MS, AL, FL. This was the first of the three.
Headed up here after a tour of Bryant-Denny Stadium and "on the way" to Pensacola. Drove to the top as that was what was required. While the store & hotel had some activity, the summit area was unoccupied. Nice little views, fun observation tower.

In the fog
A nice walk up to the top of the observation tower, but no views on this foggy morning. Northeast Alabama is surprisingly mountainous.

Did it from the lake
Took the Lake Trail from Cheaha Lake. It was very steep and difficult to find footing because of all the leaves. Autumn colors were at their peak at the lower elevations.

Highpoint #29
Quick stop on the way back to Texas and we stayed at the hotel there on the mountain.

Beautiful Sunrise
Approached from the North, parked at the end of Cheaha road. Trip up was about 3.5 miles and 1700' vertical, very pleasant hike. Cut crosscountry on the way up, but followed trails entirely, including the pinhoti, on the way back down.

Socked In
We camped for 2 nights on top of the mountain. Had to drive to the summit as it was raining. Very nice state park.

A whirlwind trip through the south
On my last vacation, I decided to knock off some high points, as I'm fairly confident that it will be quite some time before I'm able to take another vacation. Nothing too spectacular about this one, but glad to add it to the completed list.

The actual high point area around the tower was a bit of a let down. Seems it should could be made much nicer given this is a state park. Also, it was quite crowded... but of course we were during the busier fall colors season. The more isolated trails were very nice.

Underrated
Drove to the top with my dad. The tower is ok, because you get 360 views but the several antennae and dirty glass detract from their quality. I would recommend that anyone visit Pulpit Rock, though; less than a mile round trip hike and an amazing view and rock formation. In my opinion, this place is the coolest natural area in the state of Alabama, and I have been to Alabama a few times.

Cheaha, State HP #2 for us, we drove right up from Britton in FL on the same day. It was a nice little park and peak. There was a wedding going on at the pavilion near the summit. We just watched them for some reason, then got in the car and drove towards GA....
