This is Alabama. I flew into Memphis. I then proceeded on a 1,955-mile road trip through the southern states to bag the highpoints in MO, AR, LA, FL, AL, and MS. Here is AL, highpoint number 22/51 for me and ranked 35/51. This is a drive-up highpoint. There is a small fee that you pay to the State Ranger. You then park at the top next to the tower that was built by the CCC funded by FDR. The USGS disc is on the left side (as you face the tower). The climb to the top of the tower was open and the views were marginal (due to the poor design of the windows). There is a small museum next door to the tower. There are plenty of primitive campsites along with a luxurious lodge whose pool has some of the best views around.

Turned a simple 9.6 mile hike into a 15 mile hike because we took a detour :D

Cheaha Mountain Peak 14
Definitely accidentally took a detour 6 miles south of the mountain on the Pinhoti trail but it was a fantastic view of Adam's Gap ... ended up making the trip about 15 miles total but still made it to the top at sunset. Actually made the hike instead of taking the road, proud of my friends that supported and backed me up even though none of them are mountain climbers!
The pinhoti trail is very nice. Great views for Alabama

Second HP of the day. The first was in MS. We made it minutes before they were closing the mountain for the night. It was bitter cold. The wind was howling like crazy. Would have liked to see it during the day.
Drove up on Labor day morning. Nice views. Took a bit to find the marker.Took the road to the west on the way out for some nice scenery.

Another drive up high point, well, except for the steps to the top of the tower. Take the time to hike the Pulpit Rock trail as well! It is about a mile out and has cool trees and an awesome view.
I agree with an earlier post, the park staff were beyond friendly!
After the Tower and the Rock, I headed over and hiked the Chinnabee Silent Trail to the Odum Trail crossroad and back, encountering 3 seasons within the 12 mile RT trek: fall looking leaves everywhere, one area had ice on the branches and covering part of the trail and at the trailhead lake, lots of pink cherry blossoms. Also, the two waterfalls were pretty spectacular due to recent rain. Overall a beautiful hike to supplement the highpoint! (Mind you, you have to drive from the "summit" to this trailhead....it is not in that area but not a far drive)

Drove past the high point on my way to my campsite, then walked back up after pitching my tent. The views from the tower were decent, though there's an even better vantage point down the hill between the hotel and its pool.

What a shame. The clouds were on the mountain and it was a complete whiteout. Even the museum was closed at the top. Glad to get there though. HP #21.
