Jimmy Stewart's HP
I really liked the old Depression era tower. Climbing up the stairs reminded me of the scenes from the tower in Hitchcock's masterpiece Vertigo.

23rd state highpoint
Beautiful sunny morning and I was the only one at the tower. Hazy in the distance. I found a benchmark in a rock on the west side of the building, but it was a secondary marker.

Nice views
After starting down the wrong trail from the lake, I finally found the trailhead for the Lake Trail at a different spot than shown on the map. I stopped to enjoy the views from the Rock Garden, then wandered in circles searching for the unmarked Rock Garden trail, which led to the cabins. Then I bushwacked up to the top because there is apparently no trail. A correct trail map, better marking for the Rock Garden trail, and a summit trail would be nice, but I enjoyed hiking there anyway. HP10
Climbed it a second time, from Cheaha Lake again. This time I had the privilege of climbing it with my brother. Its always nice to have some quality company for a hike!
Climbed via the Cheaha Lake Trail and spent quite a while at the Rock Garden. Beautiful area! Most would probably assume that there is nothing like this in Alabama. The summit itself was anticlimatic, but the mountain itself is impressive for this state. It was a great day for climbing.

NICE OBSERVATION TOWER AT SUMMIT

Surprisingly Beautiful
Climbed up from Cheaha Lake to the Rock Gardens, and then found the top by following a myriad of roads to the highpoint. The best part was the view from the Rock Gardens...a surprisingly beautiful view, and I had it mostly to myself. 7th highpoint, I think.

Very Enjoyable!!!
The Observation Tower was worth the drive to this State Highpoint. Beautiful weather, gorgeous views. I met a couple of highpointers from Georgia, and talked with them for a while.
Minor highpointing milestone: This was my 10th State Highpoint reached.

Constructing
There was construction going on all around the summit, but they let me sneak in and tag the highest point. A nice area.

Drove up Friday and hiked and bouldered around Bald Rock (after making the obligatory stop at the highpoint), then watched the sunset at Pulpit Rock. Completely alone on the trails (refreshingly). Was joined by co-workers after making camp in the lower primitive camping. BEAUTIFUL WEATHER. In the morning hiked into the rock gardens and rappelled and climbed until sunset on Saturday. The absolute best weekend I've in the last 9 month of living in Alabama.

My dog Spanky and I nail number five! In a little over a month we've hit a full 10% of the nation's state summits. (The easy ones actually) Read all about it at http://50summits.blogspot.com

First Thing I did New Years 2007
Car camped here Dec 31st, no beer sold in AL on Sundays, so no New Years drinking for me this time. Woke up early and hiked up from the Cheaha trailhead parking, through the woods, then followed the road up through the gate and on to the summit. Very foggy, but a nice tower at least. About 2 miles round trip. The Park Ranger was very nice late the night when I got there and started setting up my car camp when asking me what I was doing at 11:45 on December 31st after I parked, hahaha. Good guys, Nice area, wanted to hike up Talladega Mt too, but had to get driving. Surprised that's not on here yet...Highpoint #7.

Sweet home Alabama!!
Go to Cheaha all the time, great views and a decent place to take car campers for a night. No real challenge, but a nice day nonetheless.

Wheres the trail
Couldn't find a trail that started at the base and went to the top. So I started at the top and went to the bottom and returned back up. The views were decent, I guess the best AL has to offer, it was worth the trip and it was highpoint number 4.

For Alabama this is impressive
I was impressed by this mountain. I didn't think Alabama would have something like this. There's a nice overlook on the drive there that gives you a good idea of the size of this mountain.
