Chief Mtn. hike  Sucess!

This was my first hike with Janey Butterworth when we met in 2007, and we had to slip and slide down the trail to avoid the icy patches. Otherwise this was an easy and fun summit.

Chief and Squaw  Sucess!

First I snow shoed up Chief, and then I headed over to Squaw Mountain. Beautiful, sunny and warm day for the first of March. Joined by my big mutt, Jack.

hail to the chief  Sucess!

quick, easy hike from the squaw pass road.

winds kicked in above treeline which made for a rough stretch, but all was good. chief's summit came surprisingly quick after treeline. added on warrior afterwards to complete the idaho springs quad.

good times  Sucess!

Quick little snowshoe and overnight camp. Not enough time to complete the igloo but the sky was clear and beautiful!

Standard route  Sucess!

A snow storm made me cancel the idea of Sniktau out of Loveland Pass. This was backup plan nr. 2 and it worked out great! Got a break in the weather in that area with fantastic views; thanks to shknbke for the suggestion. Lots of powder but the trail was packed down from the previous weekend. Completely different snow than CA, that's for sure!

from Squaw and Papoose  Sucess!

Kicked off the new year of some low hanging fruit. Great snowshoe outing up Squaw, Papoose, and Chief. The only trail breaking we had to do was up and down Papoose. A great hike in the Denver area if you only have half a day to burn.

Nice gentle hike  Sucess!

Nice, gentle hike only about 45 minutes from Denver. Nice views from the top, well taken care of trail. Great choice if you don't have a lot of time but still want to summit something.

Fun Quickie!  Sucess!

On clear days, it has an incredible view of Mt. Evans' north and east faces and bowls. You can also see Longs to the north, and Pikes to the south. Awesome quick hike from Squaw Pass Road. I grew up in Evergreen, so I've done this one at night, all seasons, from the north and the west with everyone from a solo trip to bringing flat landers not acclimatized. The hardest part of the trail is getting up the road cut from the highway. It's a great quick hike close to Denver. It is a perfect place to test your winter skills without the risk of avalanches or getting too far from "civilization". It's perfect for a quick snow shoe with someone who isn't as "driven" as some of us, GPS practice, or some alpine bouldering at the top. Have fun!

Several Times by various routes  Sucess!

Good short hike and close to home. Good one to do in the winter. Have done the mountain at least 4 times that I can remember. Will probably do it again as well.

Heatstroke  Sucess!

Whew, we Colorado folk are not used to heat like we had this day. The sun-drenched summit felt like the interior of an oven. Still, always a joy to get closer to the sky.

Nice july 4th hike  Sucess!

Hiked this mountain with my wife. Loved the views from the summit. Deffinatly the easiest summit I've ever done above treeline. Love to try this again in the winter.
