Foggy Day, No Views

Great Views
I did this the same day as Mt. Mitchell. Fog at Mt. Mitchell, but great views at Clingman's. Temperatures were in the mid 50s at the top. Great day to be there, the leaves were past peak but still beautiful.

Eleventh HP
We decided to do some backpacking in the national park the night before and morning of the hike, so we were pretty beat and just drove to the top and did the half mile paved hike to the top. The observation tower looks like a UFO (this is a good thing) and the views were spectacular.
We couldn't find the USGS marker so we took a picture of one for sale in the gift shop and counted that.

Completion of the Southern Six-Pack
The last of my bid through the Southern Six-Pack, and perhaps the most rewarding.
Parked at the Clingmans Dome lot, took the bypass to the AT, hiked to Silers Bald and back. (This was on a ranger's recommendation as an alternative to my original plan to hike from Newfound Gap. Glad I took it; great views & ridgeline hiking.)
I didn't see a soul on the entire AT until back within a mile of Clingmans. Magnificent. This was a relatively easy ridgeline hike. I took about 3.5 hours, including a 15-minute nap atop Silers and another 15 minutes on the summit of Clingmans.

long hike in
Hiked in from the Newfound Gap parking lot. Took about three hours each way, with thunderstorms and driving rain. The police were searching for a Chinese kid who went missing from the summit area.

Would have liked to have done a longer hike, but after getting blistered feet the day before on Mount Mitchell, I decided the 0.5 mile paved path sounded excellent. Clear weather and nice views on top for sure.

High point #3
Hiked to mt. Collins shelter with my pack and stayed overnight. Took the AT to Clingmans up top. Clear day and great view.
This was the second time that my hiking and HP buddy, Mike, and I have visited Clingmans Dome (first time was in 1994?). With the increase of technology (digital cameras, etc.), we basically decided to redo and document the 18 HP's we had already completed along the east coast. The disposable camera/photos just didn't cut it. Views from the atop the observation tower were enshrouded with clouds. Though, the views from the parking lot were outstanding.
