Bushwack from Scott Pass TH
Worth it? For the views of North Sister, yes. Worth doing it in Chaco's?...
I saw my friend at the coffeeshop, a normal meeting place before anything we do. I caught him before he left, he and another buddy were going for a hike. I had no water, food, and was only in Chacos, but I went anyway. They provided water, and I went hungry except for some grapes.
We ended up heading for Collier Cone. Cinder cones are terrible in sandals, but coming down was worse...I ended up sliding down on my butt. Not the best glissade, but it was better than removing cinders from my shoes every posthole on the way down.
First real hike after shoulder surgery. Couldn't shoulder a pack so i didnt bring a sweater. I was turned around about half way up the cone due to the strong freezing wind. Made a quick summit of yopah crater on the hike out. Long day with around 15 miles
In the three sisters wilderness along the p.c.t is a outstanding geologic area at the northwest foot of North sister mountain. The collier cone is the most dominant of the cinder cones in the area. It is compiled of black cinders and is in stark contrast with the other cinder formations of mostly brown cinder. Great views of the collier glacier.

Climbed Middle Sister the day before and camped at Sunshine in the Obsidian Limited Entry Area. Incredible section of the PCT, could spend an eternity there! Didn't plan to climb Collier Cone, but the PCT trail takes you right by the base of it, so I had to. The other member in my party (not disclosing her name to protect her reputation) wasn't really interested in climbing it, so I told her I would sprint up and be back in 10 minutes. It looked small, but looks can be deceiving. From the PCT it is still about 700 ft. up and just shy of a half mile to the true summit. I dropped my jumbo pack and started sprinting (literally) up the loose rock. About ten minutes into the climb I realized it was bigger than it looked and the summit was half way around the other side! The views from the rim of the cone are amazing in all directions! North Sister feels like you could touch it, and the Collier Glacier lays out in front of you with Middle Sister standing tall behind it. Very glad I took the detour up Collier Cone, well worth a trip in itself, just wish I would have had an hour or two to spend up top!
