I remember 1986 as a very good year for me in the mountains, but it was an eventful year from a news standpoint. In addition to Chernobyl, that winter/spring also saw the Challenger disaster and the attack on Libya. I remember that it sometimes seemed like the world was coming apart at the seams.
Another interesting event was the once in a lifetime (albeit disappointing) appearance of Halley's Comet. Maybe it was the bad omen that the ancients (and not so ancients) believed it was. ;-)
