Work flight from Bellingham cancelled on Sunday PM - stayed in Seattle overnight, up at 5:30am to fly out to AK Monday early. Worked 10hr day, and hiked this in moderately clear skies Monday PM. Parking lot to summit in 1hr 20min, back down in a little over an hour. Hiked it in Chacos which was new to me, nice to not jam toes on the descent. VERY WET TRAIL - like a creek at points basically

Deer Mountain Trail
Did this little peak while our ship was docked during part of the Inland Passage trip up to Whittier. Tons of snow - the locals said they hadn't had a snow year like this in a long, long time. On top met a couple of the ship's crewmembers!

Yay
Hiked with my Mom while we were in town on a ferry layover heading to Hyder, AK
This makes a fantastic run or fast hike. The through hike to Silvis Lakes is immensely fun and rewarding too.

Ran Down the Mtn Heart Racing...Almost Missed the Cruise Ship!!!....yikes
I will NEVER forget this hike for as long as I live. I was READY to leave the endless buffets, chocolate on your pillows, and stationary cruise bikes. I was in desperate need of a true Alaskan experience....off the ship and into the wilderness! My boyfriend, his cousin, and I make it to the peak no problem....but getting back was another story. Before we knew it we were lost in the Alaskan rainforest stuck in a ravine, scrambling up rocks, and trying to make it back to the cruise ship before it deserted us. We high-tailed it back and barley made it by hair on our chins! Wheeewww...what a relief! All in all a bitchin' hike & an experience I will NEVER forget.
Last port call for Golden Princess inside passage cruise. Found wallet of Melissa Pickering near top where trail ran across a steep snowfield. Beautiful trail and great climb from the docks.
Also climbed with wife 8-25-10, 6/21/13
also climbed 9-6-12, 7/21/14, 7/27/15 in the rain, 7/8/16, 6/1/17, 5/31/18, 9/3/18, 8/29/19, 7/22/22, 5/23/23
The forest on Deer Mountain is beautiful, lush and diverse; I suspect the wolves are keeping the deer population in check, which allows significant undergrowth (unlike the forest in the Northeast of the lower 48). In shorts and sneakers and still lots of slick consolidated snow in May higher up so turned back before summit. Saw two beautiful Pine Grosbeaks on the descent.

lucked out on the weather
Beautiful, mostly clear weather, snowfields blocked portions of the trail near the top; however, it was still hikeable using caution. Crampons would have made it safer. Beautiful views from the top.

I was there!
Got wet on this hike and the bugs were nuts! Luckily I am like the Julius Ceaser of hiking so it was a small conquest for the likes of me.
Its habit to hike deer mt whenever I make the trip to K-town. Was pretty rainy, but had to be done.
