Traverse from (a little above) Carrol Summit. 16.5 miles, 7500 feet of gain, 6hr 40 min car to car. Enjoyable, easy, open terrain the entire way.

Road Conditions
Climbed this one with my wife and good friend Chase. Wanted to give others some updates on the road. We came from Highway 50 and drove up to Basque Summit. Our SUV said it was 11.3 miles. I would absolutely take only a high clearance vehicle. The road is in fairly good shape for the first 8.5 miles but gets really rough for the final push to Basque Summit. Lots of large pointy rocks and branches coming at you from all angles. It's a beautiful drive, but I am glad I don't need to do it again.
From Basque Summit we hiked up the road before cutting cross country for the final 2 miles or so. We found a number of stashed water bottles along the way. Round trip the hike was 9.6 miles with 2700 feet of vertical gain. Spectacular views in every direction!

From Basque Summit
#1 10-13-17 w/ Yadahzoemtn. On a chilly windy day we fumbled our way to the top of both peaks, trying to stay positive as the wind pummeled us without mercy. But we made it and were grateful for the chance to visit these remote peaks.

Desatoya
I camped the night before about .5 mile beyond Basque Summit and hiked up the next day from there. Enjoyable hike up and over the north summit to the main summit. Awesome day as this completed the Nevada County Highpoints for me. #17/17!!!
Camped along the access road then drove to 7678' just below Basque Summit and hiked the ranch roads and cross country to the summits. Clear and windy

Desatoya South at night
I hiked this one under an almost full moon. It was a pretty night with the neighboring mountain ranges lit up. I think I made the wild horses nervous because I could hear them snorting & whinnying in the dark even though I didn't see them.

Cold Springs Canyon
Hiked the twins out of Cold Springs Canyon. The stock trail is getting overgrown but is still visible in most places. The road to Basque summit was muddy and impassable so we had to backtrack. The day turned out harder than I was expecting but the Spencer Hot Springs that evening took care of the aches. Hit Bunker Hill the next day. Fun weekend with Greg D.

fun hike
banged my truck up pretty high so was relatively easy. nice day, and a fun hike to start my 5 peaks in 5 days trip. my odometer had basque summit further than what was listed.
A crappy drive in from Smith Valley (not recommended) for an easy hike from the east, with Bill and Adam. Trip Report

Loooong hike from Carrol Summit
Made the very long hike from the end of the 4wd road that leads north for about 1/2 mi from Carrol Summit. Requires scaling or skirting quite a few small peaks along the way. Saw a herd of wild horses on one of the peaks. Great views. Leave early if you attempt this route. No trail except for the occasional horse track. Way too many domestic cattle along the way.

Rock Creek Ridges
Drove in from Reno on a clear, warm day. This is a steep approach through Pinyon Pine and Mountain Mahogany forest. Above treeline, most of the snow was gone but not much in the way of wildlife yet.

Cold Springs Canyon
Followed the Cold Springs Canyon route. Quite a lot of snow. Someone has done some trail maintenance, so the trial was in good condition and easy to follow along the creek.
This is a wonderful area where I've spent a lot of time as a youngster. Many of these desert ranges contain little jewels: year-round springs, moss-lined canyons, high meadows teeming with wildlife. It seems more precious when surrounded by breathtaking high desert landscapes.

Carrol Summit north along ridge
This was an all-day hike that needed every bit of the long solstice daylight. Hiking along the Desatoya spine was exhilarating with awesome views in all directions. It's tempting to follow the horse trails but they don't exactly lead anywhere. In retrospect I would have backpacked and spent the nite out instead of hurrying back before twilight set in.
