Route Climbed: Various at East Ramparts Date Climbed: Various 1999 - 2002
I did my first ever outdoor rock climb in Devil's Lake, back when I lived in Chicago. On summer weekends, this is an incredibly popular place. There is just a ton of good climbing here. I've done about 15 to 20 routes, all easy, all on toprope.
My favorite route was Birch Tree Crack 5.8. Awesome!
Route Climbed: Vulture Lookout Date Climbed: October 25, 2003
This climb was part of a weekend outing with the Chicago Mountaineering Club. We set up top ropes for a dozen or so routes at Vulture Lookout, which is on the East Bluff, west of the quary rocks. Sven Olof Swartling, author of the book, Climber's Guide to Devil's Lake was there and shared some of his secrets and knowledge with the group.
Just a warning about the route ratings at Devil's Lake. Consensus amoung this group is that some of the routes are under-rated. The smooth nature of the quartzite rock yields a lot of rounded edges with very poor hand-holds and friction.
Vulture Lookout offers a great mix of climbing routes, from 5.6 to 5.12c. There are also great views of the valley all the way to the Wisconsin River. It was a great day of climbing with a great group of people.
