SW Slopes
Just to be sure, I climbed seven different high points up there. I think the first one was the true summit, actually. Another was definitely the one called "Dum." A fun area.

Mallory Cave Trail
The weather was great and I had only time for an afternoon hike. This one was a perfect choice with a nice mix of trail and some scrambling to a pointy summit. With the good conditions I didn't have any route finding problems and the scrambling was straightforward but there is some exposure involved on the summit. I have known about this locally named summit since the 80's but only now have found time to climb to its summit.
Seasonal Closure--as in, all four seasons apparently
I've been on the approach to this minor summit many times but never made it to the top for various reasons. One of them is that there is a Seasonal Closure sign posted along the route to the base of the east side of the summit block. It's not date-specific and doesn't reference any particular animal it's trying to protect (some form of raptor no doubt--thanks OSMP for being specific) so it's guess-work as to whether or not it's legal to pass through at any given time of the year. Luckily, I had some free time and was able to find a rugged route that hit the summit block from the south without crossing into the arbitrary zone. Anyway, it's a fun local hike with a little bit of everything.
Climbed the wrong slab up near the top, had to do an interesting downclimb, found the right summit block, climbed it, then started heading down cause of an incoming T storm. 2 hours roundtrip from Chautauqua TH.
After countless trips up Mallory Cave trail for climbing and hiking, I finally went on to find the summit this winter. It is one of the most amazing areas of Boulder Mtn Parks.

Wicked down-climb
Fun climb to the top. I surely missed something going down to the SW. No "meadow" involved. Wicked steep downclimb with some class 4 over drops onto slanted earth. Ended up exiting through stone "door" near the creek, then crossing the creek and climbing up to Bear Peak Trail. Also, sweet hard-pack snow made for probably some easier going in places, some harder going in others. Thanks for posting this page. I tried to follow directions, but getting off-track might have been the best (and most exciting, for sure) part!

Cool hike, nice rocky summit to climb round on. Quite windy at top.
Route Climbed: from Mallory Cave to summit Date Climbed: September 1977
A hiking buddy and I were in Colorado for a business trip, so I took him for a baby helping of climbing, doing an exposed third-class route on a lower pinnacle. Then to Mallory Cave and the summit.
Beautiful way to spend the morning, and had to high-tail it to Colorado Springs, where we arrived at the conference still pretty dusty.

Very fun hike and an exciting, airy summit. Went with my wife and a friend, Josh. Tried to descend the SW slopes, but ended up getting off-route and worked our way down a steep couloir between cliff bands, until we made it to the bottom of Bear Canyon. A great afternoon in the mountains!

Climbed with Peter and Mason, and got within about 75' of Dum before we hit a raptor closure sign :-(. Could have spit on the summit, but technically we missed it since we decided not to face the potential wrath of the OSMP on their crusade to keep us of our land. :-). Will have to come back in the fall when the top isn't closed. This is a really fun peak to scramble around on.

Given the new snow and terrible driving conditions, I decided not to climb Mount Evans today and hiked up Dinosaur mountain. Initially I planned to attempt to drop to the ridge and try to climb Green Mountain, however given the conditions, Dinosaur turned out more difficult than expected. The trail was extremely slippery and treacherous due to the new snow, and the routefinding was difficult, since no path was visible. I found several routes that would be possible without snow, but they were too risky for me on my own during the winter. (I believe that I found Ryan's tunnel). After trying different approaches to the summit (mostly trying to look to the right (north) of where the trail ends) for more than 1 hour, I final found an easy route, traversing around the summit block to the south across a small boulderfield.
Great winter trip, however, I am sore due to several falls on icy rocks on the way down. I will be back during better weather to attempt the ridge towards Green Mountain.

I took Erin and my friend John, and tried to find the same route I did in spring of 2003. I don't think this is the way most people go, and it isn't the route the page's author describes, but I have seen evidence of foot traffic in spots. I know of a few secrets along the way... a tunnel, an alcove, amazing views. My route involves a fair amount of ups and downs, but it's a blast! We hit the trail from the NCAR at 6:30 and returned a little before 9:00.
Route Climbed: Porch Alley, descent via south ridge meadow Date Climbed: May 7, 2004
Incredible! Rossiter describes it as a very zen summit and I now understand what he means. Loads of violet green swallows and chickadees flying around. Incredible views of Bear Peak, the Sacred Cliffs and Skunk Canyon. Wonderful scrambling and not a soul in sight.
