"As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life - so I became a scientist. This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls."

Ocean to Peak Adventures: Mountain Summit Challenge 2023This was a miserable slog. Shifting, loose talus galore.

Splitboard tourSkinned up to about 11,200 ft via the southeast gully, booted up the ridge the rest of the way. Great views and weather. Still pretty thin, needs another storm to fill in nicely. Just over 4 hours car to car.

Pile of choss that had awesome views from the topTook the Kavanaugh Ridge route, which was probably not as steep as the routes starting from the Virginia Lakes trailhead.

Gorgeous day for a hikeSummited this peak with my 18 year old son and his best bud (also 18 yo). Light zephyr breezes, air temp 74F...perfect day for a hike.
We started from about 10,500 feet (slightly below Kavanuagh Ridge proper).
Incredibly spectacular 360 degree views, was able to see North Peak (bagged in 2018) and Conness (yet to bag), much of Eastern Hoover Wilderness high country and some high elevation lakes.
Was supposed to summit Whitney July 4, but permit was cancelled due to earthquake-relates "trail damage" this was a great ad hoc plan.
Highly recommend.

SW slope from Moat LakeLate season climb, Moat Lake was freezing over. Better to go up the SW ridge by reaching the saddle above Moat Lake than to angle up the red rock from the N shore of Moat Lake. I went up the SW slope (tedious) and down the SW ridge (better). Trip report

North Couloir SkiClimbed SE gulley and skied down north couloir; wrapped around through the meadow and climbed back up to east ridge and skied back to truck on VA Lakes Road. Fantastic conditions and the mountain all to myself!

Ridge Traverse from Olsen to Black and around to DunderbergTraversed the ridge around Virginia Lakes with Eric Su and Mason. The ridge from Peak 11385 to the southwest slope of Dunderberg was fun, snowy class 3-4.

SE RidgeVery windy day with Todd, but great views. Descent down the SW slope is not a fun one.

Wow that was hard!Okay, to be fair, I still had a cold and that made it far worse. But despite talk about 0% of normal snowpack in California, that certainly was not the case! The snow impacted our trip and forced us to take a harder route down. It didn't help on the way up either! We got 10 on the summit and descended a steep gully that wasn't a good way to go. But we made it. I have now done pretty much all the major dayhike peaks in Virginia Lakes.

From Kavenaugh RidgeThis would normally be a class-1 route, but the north chute was 75% under fresh snow (from the late September storm), and some detours were needed to avoid the white stuff. New SPS summit register placed in August 2014. Fourteen parties have signed up the register since.

From Kavenaugh Ridge ORVHiked up from the Kavenaugh Ridge ORV off of the spur road that joins the Virginia Lake and Green Creek roads.
And then followed the NE ridge to the summit. Probably easier but longer to take the ORV road all the way up to the Kavenaugh Ridge plateau but this wasn't a bad route.
Pic and commentary are here.
Summit Registry (and the whole summit cairn) have gone missing since I was last up here in 2004.

From Virginia Lakes THThe obvious ridge is mostly well-behaved talus on the way up. I unfortunately wasn't able to find a boot-ski on the way down and, after suffering a bit, just took the ridge.
Easy hike, cool views into northern Yosemite.

SE RidgeDecided to do this peak while everyone else sat in the air conditioned Bridgeport library. Turned out to be the best peak of the ten that I did over 5 days. Some loose talus but nowhere near what I was warned about.
