Standard route from the north
Surprisingly dry, windless and warm. Nice to see the greater Sangres with plenty of lingering snow. Great day!

Really nice morning hike. More enjoyable than West Spanish. Great views, cool summit. 5 hours 45 mins car to car (from lower 2wd trailhead).

Very nice climb. We didn't start at sunrise, but were still on top before noon and off the ridges before the first claps of thunder. For me it was quite steep, but I'm used to switchbacks like they have in Big Bend or the Grand Canyon. Here there was really no "trail" above tree line.
Yes, that was us. I was the one chasing you two up the mountain thinking two of our group was ahead of me. I never did quite figure out where it was I passed them! It was a great climb, but boy were my quads sore for about 3 days! -Dean

West Ridge
I waited 10 years for this! After summiting West Spanish Peak in July of 2001, I finally made it back to this area to summit East Spanish Peak. This mountain did not disappoint. Our campsite along the 4x4 road was pretty divine, too. Thanks to Alan's directions, we found a campsite at 10:00 PM in the pitch dark - no problems! Just like West Spanish, though - man, there were a LOT of bugs at the summit!

Camped in the Saddle
Hiked from the 2WD trail head up to the saddle, stayed a night and climbed the next day. Perfect weather, only saw 2 other people. Coming from 1000' to 12,000' was interesting. Took us about 6 hours from saddle to peak and back to the saddle. I wanted to try W. peak from the saddle, but my girlfriend said no. We drove to Cordova pass for the W peak. I would love to go back and do both from the saddle, but we will need to be a little more physically prepared. I love the view from these mountains.
First time this summer I had a mountain to myself. Was a nice hike overall. Camped at 4wd trailhead and left from there at 6 a.m., glad I didnt leave any earlier as it was brutal on the talus with so much frost. I stayed about 30 mins on top hoping to let the sun melt it a little but was still slick as snot on the way down. Glad I had poles both for the slippery talus and steep descent to the saddle, and I mean steep :D.
I love this climb. Very remote, For a peak so close to the interstate. Great little rock scrabble at the top.

West Ridge Route
We had beautiful weather for this one. We hiked from the lower trailhead and yes it is more strenuous than the higher West Spanish Peak.

West ridge
There's still a ton of snow on the north and east facing slopes to the saddle and I paid the price. Brutal sidehilling on snowshoes. It got easier once I got to the saddle as I stayed on south facing aspects as much as possible. Steep grunt to 11K, then it's pretty mellow after that. The descent in the softening snow was torture, but thankfully it was only 2 miles with patches of dry trail on west facing slopes. We got to within .4 mile of the 4wd trailhead and were stopped by drifts. It would be an easy climb in summer!

East Peak woes
East Peak is just harder than West Peak, if you have to slog up from the passenger car trailhead (road). The distance is at least 11 miles round trip and 4200 feet of gain. Left the 2WD trailhead at 5 AM and was on top at 11 AM. Steep to gain the east-west high access ridge leading to false summit.

East Spanish Peak
Climbed West Spanish Peak via the standard route the day before. I thought ESP was harder than WSP! Steep! Great views of WSP, Blanca, Greenhorn, Pikes and back east towards home. Climbed w/good friends Aaron and Cameron.

The climbing was great...and the grunt up to the ridge was memorable. Even though Alan forgot the trekking poles...he found me a sturdy stick. What a great day with my husband.
