Lower Echo  Sucess!

The slot seems short but takes a surprisingly long time. Gorgeous. Didn't use a wetsuit but my butt muscles were spasming with cold.

poor judgement  Sucess!

Solo with no experience or equipment in January. Nearly drowned...learned valuable lesson.

Echo  Sucess!

Lots of swimming and annoying 10 ft raps with weird starts.

Amazing in Ice  Sucess!

I've done this canyon four times with various groups. It is a great canyon, even down to the near 180 degree turn the canyon makes before the last rap, and the mini pothole right there. Also very accessible. Best trip, though, was before the snow melted and there were massive ice pillars flowing down into the canyon in multiple places. Be careful, the canyon bottom is covered with snow bridges that cave way into water filled pools (...treat it like a glacier with crevasses, etc), but its an awesome sight.

My 1st technical canyon  Sucess!

My first trip to Zion and my 1st canyoneering experience. It's been several years now since I've been to Zion, but it a great experience.

Middle Echo   Sucess!

This is mutipule short rappel canyon. The water is very cold. Its colder than another canyon. I could not stand in the water more than minutes even I wore wetsuit.
Last half of this canyon is very beautiful. I think this is one of the best slot canyon to hike.

Echo Canyon  Sucess!

This is actually a really fun canyon even though I hear little about it. The water is skunky though, but what's new in the canyons. Love the downclimbing parts.

Beautiful  Sucess!

I did my first canyoneering trip down Echo Canyon a couple weeks ago. We didn't take wetsuits, and I was teeth-chattering cold in a few places. The rappels were short (we brought a 20m rope) and easy. I could touch the bottom with my head above water at the base of all of the rappels.

More details are at http://blog.brucec.net/2007/09/echo-canyon.html, and I have pictures at http://picasaweb.google.com/bruckie/EchoCanyon.

Loved It  Sucess!

Slot was bone dry in early September. It is a good slot for intermediates, or beginners learning the sport. The pothole was a fun obstacle that presented no problems when dry. It is about 8 feet deep, so if it is full you may want to throw a bag over the other edge to avoid treading water.

Cold, Middle Echo  Sucess!

Super cold water but otherwise my favorite time of year to be in Zion. NO other people and no shuttles. It had rained alot and the potholes were full of water.

Middle Echo

Descended this one a few years ago while on one of my many climbing/canyoneering weekends in Zion.

Also attempted a bottom-up Middle Echo in super-gnarly snow-ice conditions with Ram in early summer 2009. Super intense. Unsuccessful.

Fun Canyon

This was my first canyon and it was very fun. Like Scott said it is well bolted, but for those who want to have fun in a slot canyon, this is it. We did it in September and it was dry compared to normal but still really full of water and wetsuits were needed. It takes only a few hours and I recommend it as a good time for people with moderate skills who want practice.

Did it  Sucess!

May 27 2016

Kessler and I completed the Echo Canyon Route . The park was crowded(!), but we saw no one in Echo Canyon. It took us four hours to get from the East Entrance, to pick up our permit and drysuit, and to wait in line for the shuttle before finally arriving at the trailhead. We didn't start up the trail until 2:40 PM.

We were carrying a lot of gear since it was only my son and I and since we were told that there was a difficult keeper pothole in the canyon. I even carried a small rubber raft and Kessler carried a life jacket just in case. Several people were wondering what we were doing with a life jacket on the trail.

We made our way to the top of the canyon and scrambled our way into the slot. Almost immediately the cold swims began and they were very COLD since the snow and ice had just melted out of the canyon. I was chilly in my 4/3 wetsuit and I wished I had brought gloves for us.

The rappels and downclimbs were fun and the narrows were nice. The canyon was a lot wetter than when we did it before. The keeper pothole wasn't a problem and we really didn't need to bring all that gear.

After exiting the slot, we took some time to dry off and hiked down the trail and back to the shuttle.

May 19 2007

Blasted through with my brother Richard and cousin Danny. We partner assisted everything and didn't rappel.
