After hiking in and climbing Hawksbeak, we camped at the Rainbow Canyon mosquito ranch. The following morning we climbed Tower Peak, then traversed along the west ridge between it and Ehrnbeck. The west side of Ehrnbeck has numerous route finding challenges, as many promising lines drop off into air. We persisted, and finally gained the summit block by locating a wide crack down to the saddle between the main summit and its last gendarme. From here it was a squirm up a chimney blocked by two chock stones that could be crawled between, leading to easy rock to the summit. We descended down the easy slopes of the east side. A 43 mile, two night and three day trip.
Route Climbed: NE Ridge Date Climbed: July 22, 2004
This was part of a 10-day backpacking trip. I climbed the NE Ridge from the head of Thompson Canyon, then ran the ridge over to Wells Peak. There were some enjoyable short Class III/IV sections along the upper part of the NE ridge before you reach the sandy eastern slope leading to the summit. It was an enjoyable climb.
