"Got tight last night on absinthe and did knife tricks. Great success shooting the knife into the piano. The woodworms are so bad and eat hell out of all furniture that you can always claim the woodworms did it."

Super Bowl Sunday SummitSnowshoes to the base from Carson Pass. Went up near the edge on the North side, with our backs to Red Lake Peak. Fun little route to practice crampons and axes with a bit of "mixed" scrambling. With brother Jesse. Windy and cold, all around super nice day.

Nice snow hikeBrought snow spikes but didn't use them. Plenty of snow on the trail, but really not much at all on top.

Beautiful ViewsCamping for two nights at Winnemucca Lake. I did a quick trip up Elephants Back early one morning. I did this once before many years ago. The best route is around (not through) the large boulder field that sits between Winnemucca Lake and the southwest slope of Elephants Back before ascending. I posted a video tour from the summit here: https://youtu.be/gXXbJFzWuUs

DayhikeHeaded up to Mokelumne Wilderness for a potential backpack but decided to just spend the day snowshoeing and sleep indoors. We originally planed to head up Round Top but we came unprepared for that sort of climb in the current conditions. Consolation prize was to summit Elephants Back and had some fun glissading down the NW side.

Beautiful Views!I’ve been hiking in the Carson Pass area for years. Usually our hikes end with fishing a picnics at Winnemucca Lake. This trip we decided to go for the Elephants Back Summit. We started our hike up the NE shore of Winnemucca Lake which led us to another small pond and a large boulder field. I’m assuming this is not the main route, but we boulder hopped all the way up the ridge to the open ground that led up the south end of Elephants Back. Made an easy ascent to the top and were afforded amazing views of Red Lake Peak, Hope Valley, Forestdale Divide, Round Top, Jeff Davis Peak and Caples Lake. We spent about 20 minutes on top, found a few rock piles but no summit register. Made the climb with my wife and 7-year old son, his first ever summit! Next up, Round Top!

Snowshoe ascentSnowshoed out with the Sierra Club during a weekend of snowcamping. Love the views of all the peaks in this area. This is a relatively easy climb, and a great way to see this area in the winter.

solo snow climbthe weather was good in the morning and got flurries in the afternoon. Quite windy when I reached the saddle of Round Top and The Sisters. Climbed The Sisters first and then this minor peak on my way back to the trailhead.

Up from JMTStill lots of snow in the Round Top area. I had some fun side stepping up this as well as gaining the east ridge of Round Top. What is up with the $5 fee?

Carson PassGreat hike that was intended to be on Round Top, but the weather and conditions forced us to rethink the day. Super fun walk to the top from Carson Pass. Lots of snow but it was worth it.

Family Snow HikeInvigorated by the snowy approach, my daughter and I scrambled up the mostly barren summit scree just as bitter winter winds finally made their way to the Sierra after an extremely warm week (and winter). My wife and two sons skipped the summit, but all of us enjoyed the scenery, supportive snow, and some decent sledding.

Standard Route, WinterWrong turn at Albuquerque and ended up cross country on snowshoes through the woods to the base. A happy accident, enjoyed not seeing a sign of any human, only trees and snow, most of the way. All but a patch or two of the snow on the mountain itself has melted out, so ditched snowshoes at base of it and hoofed to the top.

With Round TopMistakenly stayed on the PCT and realized it on the back side of Elephants Back. Climbed loose scree and rocks up to Elephants Back summit and traveled cross country to hook up with the right trail at Round Top Lake. Enjoyed the class 3 climb at the end.
