Elk Mountain - Middle Contour

Elk Mountain - Middle Contour

This small, slightly forested bump is one of three closed-contours at the top of Elk Mountain that could be considered as a summit candidate. The NE contour (from which this photo was taken) is obviously lower than the other two closed-contours, making the middle contour and the southwestern-most contour (not shown in this photo) the candidates for the true summit. After having stood atop all three closed-contours, this middle contour seemed slightly taller than the southwestern-most contour, despite the southwestern-most contour being the marked summit location on maps. At least those two closed-contours should be visited to proclaim a successful summit attempt. However, most of the middle contour has been destroyed by logging and quarry activity, so there might come a time in the future when only the southwestern-most contour will be the only point needed to be summited. Photo taken on November 6, 2010.

Changes

That is interesting to see this now, just four years later. That little road to the top wasn't there and I wonder how much longer the actual timber on the highpoint will last. An interesting picture.

Re: Changes

I thought about taking the photo you added to the page and showing it side-by-side with the one I took this past weekend. It's only been a few years, and the differences are striking!
