Farmington Ridge from Thurston Peak.

Farmington Ridge from Thurston Peak.

This image shows the whole route from Francis Peak, (seen with the FAA installation on top)from the summit of Thurston Peak. An interesting thing about Thurston Peak and much of the ridge from Francis is the geologic composition of the rock. The majority of the rock is the Farmington Canyon Complex, which is primarily gneiss and schist. It is more commonly referred to as the crystalline basement complex, which is pre-cambrian in age. The rock is over 2.4 billion years old, as old as the rock in the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Photo taken June 4, 2009.
