Worth every step
Fun little trail with 10 feet of Class 3 that turned out to be not that bad if you were careful. A sky full of cirrus made the summit views outstanding. Much to reflect on what both man and nature hath wrought. Nobody here on a beautiful Sunday except a family that wisely turned back at the crux.

What a view!
Been wanting to to this one for a while, due to the amount of time I've spend looking at it from climbs around the Northshore Rd. Since Maddie and I got a new Subie, we decided it was time! Steep, but quick hike up, with incredible views of Lake Mead and the surrounding areas.

Fortification Hill
Ran/hiked up in 40 min. A good breeze kept it relatively cool for a July morning in the desert. My #15 of 52 Peak Club.

Cold and cloudy day
Followed the usual route up the east side and through the cliffs. Day was cold and cloudy, but nothing worse than that.

Easy summit to kick off the 2014 winter season. Took the standard ridge route this time around.

Main Trail, sort of
Ended up in the wrong wash at the start, and subsequently on the wrong ridge approaching the base of the cliffs.
Saw a small herd of 5 bighorns on my approach.

Fortification
It was a windy but clear day. Nice hike and great view of Lake Mead from the summit. I watched numerous tourist helicopters fly over the mountain on their way to the Grand Canyon.

SW route too loose
My wife and I tried the southwest route (starting by the outhouses). It's crazy how loose the rock is on some of the scrambles and even though it was fun, as we started to approach the summit cliffs, it was just too loose and exposed for our liking. We decided to turn around and made our own route back through a dry riverbed. Views of the lake were still nice from halfway up. My recommendation is to use the safer route that starts further up Kingman Wash.

Standard Route
Nice quick easy summit with great views.
Desert wildflower season is just starting. Bit overcast but otherwise nice spring day.
Lots of noise pollution from the neverending stream of tourist copters bound for the grand canyon. (Never saw any returning- do they go back via a different cooridor?)
The wind sucked, but Tyler's company made the "up" part manageable!

different conditions
The first time was my first trip with the LVMC, 8 mo. post brain damage. I watched as Toby was carried to the summit in a snowstorm.
Today I watched as Toby led the hike. Due to strange circumstances, I went up and down twice. And I was worried beforehand that I might not get enough exercise...
I've also been up by the SW face -- creepy, with too much loose rock.

normal route, but at night
Gas-$12, ticket from the dam police-$125, views from the top of Fortification Hill under an almost full moon-priceless! Les Rekve and Joe Hall hiked/climbed with me to the top of this one. We signed the register at 11PM. Les's son Kirk and Joe's brother Ben hiked in a half mile but then waited for us to get to the top and back. Quite breezy tonight but the views of Lake Mead, Las Vegas, etc. at night were worth it. Didn't hear or see one single helicopter :)

Several times via the normal trail, once via the West Ridge. Pleasant mountain. We often see bighorn sheep when we do this hike. The slideshows are here: Fortification Hill 2005 , Fortification Hill 2006
