2nd CLNP Peak
in two days, but another easy one. Maddie and I hit this one up, after grabbing coffee at the lodge. Another easy hike, with immediate views. Now that I think about it, we should've gone for Applegate too.

Crater Lake 7 Summits on the rim proper
Climbed as part of our 7 summits on the rim proper. Started with a double of Garfield Peak and Applegate, followed by a double of The Watchman and Hillman Peak, then Llao Rock, CloudCap, and Dutton Cliffs as singular climbs.
Garfield isn't too bad. Nice wide trail for the most part with a few narrower and rocky sections but all easily done in casual gear. Nice views from the top of the island, lake, and surrounding summits.

12 peaks in 2 days
A solo trip which I started with Misery Ridge at Smith Rock. From there I stopped for a hike up Black Butte on my way to Crater Lake. At the lake I hiked up the 5 primary peaklets around the lake and a few minor ones before driving to Yamsay Mountain for the final hike. See the trip report.
Climbed with my nephew in the morning before the rains moved in for the day. Cool views of the clouds rolling in, and a rainbow over Wizard Island made this a very enjoyable summit on a cool damp morning, even if it kept us from heading out to Applegate.

With my pregnant wife
We hiked up from the lodge, my wife about 6 months pregnant waited on the summit with the squirrels while I did a quick traverse over to Applegate Peak and back. Lots of tourists, nice warm day with good views.

Garfield Peak from Rim Village
Easy and short hike with great views of Crater Lake. Still quite some snow on the trail.

Surreal Summit
Went to Crater Lake after the first snowfall of the year hoping to climb Hillman Peak, but the whole lake area was fogged in and we had some trouble navigating once we were on the approach to the summit. So we regrouped at Rim Village and headed up Garfield Peak Trail instead. Just a little muddy at first with some great views of the lake, the trail quickly turned into a surreal march through fog and by the time we reached the summit it was hard to see the hand in front of your face. A great time, nonetheless.
UPDATE: Went back to Crater on 2/24/14 and hiked out along the East Rim Road for about a mile, then bushwhacked north through the snowfields to Applegate. Followed the ridge across to Garfield and summited again, just because. Lots of good glissading to be had. Highly recommended winter climb.

record snow year
almost the whole way kick-stepping on heavily-consolidated snow (Garfield Pk only). Trail officially "closed". The Rim drive was not even open (due to snow accumulation) until 23 July.

Hiked up Garfield after doing Scott. Saw two deer right below the summit, very tame.

Hiked only to the summit of Garfield due to lateness of day. Excellent views of Crater Lake from up high!

East Face Coulior Route
I went up a seldom climbed route, or so I would imagine, although there were other tracks in a few areas. Having parked below Applegate's Eastern cliff face I worked my way up the boulder field into a steep coulior and onto the summit. I took a broad slope south of the coulior to descend back down the east side. Six of six summits off Jeff Howberts list of Oregon's 100 highest peaks done in 32 hours.

Garfield traverse
Took trail from Rim Village to summit of Garfield Peak. Then descended to south and ascended pumice meadows east to summit of Applegate Peak (see pic). From car to Applegate took me and my climbing companions (15 and 8 years-old) 2 1/2 hours. Note the Garfield Peak trail is closed about 300 feet below the top because people have been going around the snowfields causing erosion. It's easy to cross the snowfields and stay on trail or snow if you're not a tourist in tennis shoes.
