Granite Peak
Needed to stop and climb something along the way from Great Basin NP to Bend, OR. A County Highpoint fit the bill. Quick hike up Granite. Stayed at the Lye Creek campground which was nice.
Hiked from end of 4x4 road. Great hike and easy scramble. Neat rock outcroppings along the drive to Hinkey Summit.

Nice area. Scramble isn't more than class 2 really with a little bit of exposure.

Hinkey Summit Cattle Guard 8450 TH
#1 10-8-17 W/ Yadahzoemtn. It was a character-building experience because of the horrendous weather. Autumn colors and scintillating rock formations on the drive up to and down from Hinkey Summit were breathtaking to admire. I may write a trip report regarding the weather.

from 8450 gate
Drove from HInkey Summit to the first cattle gate at about 8450 feet. Followed fence line then left side of ridge from saddle below summit. Easy scramble for last section. There are two registers, one on a pedestal in an ammo box, the other in a red can by the benchmark.

37 peaks in 19 days
There was bad weather for weeks in WA so Heather and I drove through OR, CA, NV, UT, and ID. We climbed 37 peaks in 19 days. We hiked Jackson Mountains High Point and Granite Peak on our 6th day. Granite is a fun hike and the surrounding area is very pretty. trip report

Granite Peak
Started raining pretty hard as I was getting in to Paradise Valley. The road up to Hinkey Summit was really good however despite the heavy rainfall. I had driven a long way from SL so I was determined to get this one despite the crumby conditions. Rained most of the way up but did stop right before I got to the top. No views but still good hike. Nevada CoHP #9.

Easier Than Expected
After doing Stevenson BM (OR) in the early morning, I ventured a relatively short distance to the south for Granite Peak. It is a desolate CoHP and I did not imagine myself venturing back to that particular region of northern Nevada anytime soon (or even wanting to). Despite seemingly good weather, I got chased (freaked) off the summit by one lone thundercloud; that summit seemed like a lightning rod waiting to happen.

In a whiteout, snow
Looked impossible till the clouds parted enough to show us the left side of the summit ridge. Must be class 2 when dry; a bit scarier when covered with snow.

nice short hike
prominent summit. worthy views with little effort. a good fall outing
Hiked in from the fence line along the 4wd road. Nice and easy use trails made for a quick 2 hour hike. Nice area but the views were lacking due to haze. The road to Hinkey Summit is in good shape. I hit Chocolate Mtn afterwards which was not worth the effort (too much bush whacking).

snowy
3-6 feet of snow on the upper ridges, circumnavigated summit block to southeast face and snow climbed the last several hundred feet. Awesome views this morning as I was able to see mountains south of the Ruby's over 150 miles away to the southeast.

East Ridge
A relatively straightforward route to the summit. We parked at the meadow near the weather station, as the road became too wet and marshy to continue. It took us less than an hour and a half to reach the summit from there. The register book was soaked, though it hadn't rained in some time.
