Part of a troika
The only other people on the summit were worried I was a bear as I approached. Not a far fetched assumption as there were blueberry bushes everywhere all loaded down with fruit.

Solitude
Hiked the Art Loeb Trail north around the summit. Then I took the old ALT up to the summit rock. This was the only summit I had all to myself on this hike. On to Shining Rock.

5 pack
Via Art Loeb Trail nice outing included in a grab of Black Balsam, Tennent Mountain, Grassy Cove Top, Shining Rock & Sam Knob. Unrelenting blackberry thickets as noted in the description is accurate. Just ask my scraped arms & legs. Wear eye protection.

Windy
Just realized I never logged this hike. I hiked Grassy Top with my brother-in-law the same day we hiked Tennent and Black Balsam Knob. It was a rather windy day amd cold.

Done the whole ridge
Have traversed the whole shining rock ledge/ridge from Black Balsam Knob, over all the sixers to Cold mtn. Spectacular area!

Wet
Climbed to the top just after proposing to my girlfriend on Tennant Mountain. We got incredibly wet from the brush on the way up. No views were seen, due to the intense fog.

Frozen Bushes
Found my way up and over from Shining rock Gap through frozen bushes crowding the trail after a night of freezing rain. My lower half was soaked along with my boots. With temps hovering around freezing, it was a challenging, miserable slog . I'll do it again, just in better weather conditions next time.

Couldn't resist it.
I was already in the neighborhood and decided to make my way to the top of Grassy Cove Top rather than hike around it. I lost the trail at some point and ended up just pushing by way through the brush and trees and making my own path down the side of Grassy Cove Top.

Art Loeb Trail
Trails are overgrown and trench like. I would not recommend in summer I couldn't imagine how thick it would be. just take the ivestor gap instead of art loeb.

Art Loeb Trail
A great side trip in the way to Shining Rock. You really have to watch for the summit trail, though. In 2005 there was nothing more than a weathered post marking the trail and the trail itself was quite overgrown.
Grassy Cove Top via Black Balsam Knob/Art Loeb Trail
We hiked Grassy Cove Top on a warm windy Easter eve. The views from the summit were outstanding. The summit is a perfect place to camp if you don't mind the wind.
