Sad day
Grays was the first 14er I did after moving to Colorado in 2001. It was also the first 14er I did with Odin, my faithful Golden Retriever. Odin went on to hike 16 more 14ers with me. But at Thanksgiving of 2004, Odin passed away at the much too young age of six. This day I was joined by two friends to say goodbye to Odin by scattering his ashes atop Grays.

Grays and Torreys from Stephens Gulch
I had just moved to Colorado, and Grays and Torreys would be my first 14ers since moving here. The day started kind of gray, but didn't look threating. Easily bagged Grays and then headed over to Torreys. And while resting upon the summit it started to spit little balls of sheet. So at that point I started down, and when I got to the saddle between Grays and Torreys it was nearly whiteout conditions. Further down the snow turned to a cold rain. Fortunately I was dressed for the occasion, however many other folks were hiking in cotton sweatshirts, jeans, sneakers and no rain gear. At this point I'm thinking I am going to read about a lot of people who die due to the elements on these mountains.

Stevens Gulch Trailhead.
Torreys as well. A snowstorm hit while on the mountain and lasted till the next day which limited the hiking options for the rest of the week.

Route Climbed: Stevens Gulch Trailhead. (With Ed Viesturs).
Started my hike at 4:30 am. Sumitted Torreys Peak pretty early and then continued up to Grays Peak summit. I was getting ready to head down when I met Ed Viesturs on his way up to the summit.
Took a couple shots with Ed at the summit and I continued going down to the TH. Foggy day.
Grays Peak: 4,349 m (14,270 ft).

Standard Route
Did the Grays/Torreys combination. Nice day, still snowy packed over most of the area. Lots of post-holing that day, and lots of skiers and snowboarders.
A fine day of climbing solo. Snow made the final 200 ft or so kinda of difficult in approach shoes.

Via Kelso Ridge and Torrey's
A perfect day of climbing! We started out via Kelso Ridge...made the traverse to Gray's and descended the standard route. On the traverse we saw several Mountain Goats. The only way it would have been better is if there were less people. I was surprised how crowded it was for a Monday.
A successful summit late in the day. Snow flurries and some wind atop, but wonderful views as clouds past. Road to trailhead is deeply rutted, my rental Kia Rio couldn't climb it, so parked at I-70 exit #221 and began. 7hrs total, no daylight left for Torreys Peak, but it's right there! Trail was well maintained, some light post-holing last 1000'. A+ on this 9th tallest 14'er in Colorado for accesibility from Denver, the nice approach, and the close proximity to Torreys Peak.

A very nice trail, it was like a highway up to the top though. I saw a guy propose to his girlfriend up on top. Nice views all around.

2nd Fourteener
Summitted Longs just the day before, which made this climb a little more tiresome. Absolutely beautiful scenery from the gulch. Lots of people! Finally made a summit together with my climbing partner. I was going to do the traverse to Torrey's, but I just wasn't feeling it. Great views and magnificent scenery. Even spotted some mountain goats!
Nice hike despite the crowds. Sometimes easy can also make for a pleasant day in the mtns.

Beautiful day hike
Took the standard route up. For early June, it was very dry and the trail was open all the way up save for two or three small sections of ice and snow.

Growning up, I climbed Grays/Torreys MANY TIMES in the 1990s but this is the most recent. I escorted my cousin Watky and my friend Nick with me; it was their first time up there. We almost didn't make it due to the approaching dark clouds. We snapped some pics and did a rush descent.
