It's Worth It
Conditions were great. The best glissading of my life off the saddle of Torreys and Grays. A very fun climb!

A fun climb
This was my first 14er climb (in 1994). The trail is well-marked and accessible. We had fantastic blue-sky weather that day and there were a lot of people on the mountain. Loved it.

Via the Lost Rat
We had a group of 6, everyone had a great time. There was about 3 inches of fresh snow in the couloir with a wet consolidated layer underneath. Crampons were not needed since the conditions were ideal for kicking steps.

Via Torreys
Climbed Kelso to Torreys then traversed the saddle to Grays. A big pile of rock.

Started off clear, late morning thunderstorm
Stared fairly early on a very clear morning in order to avoid potential thunderstorms. Unfortunately one arrived early building at 10:30. Worked our way down quickly near the bottom lightning arrived. Glad we got off the peak and did not attempt to do Torreys on this outing.

good day
Took the Chihuahua Gulch trailhead up the valley to Grays/Torreys. Originally had planned on doing Torreys but we saw a sweet snow coulior up the (east?) side of Grays. Got up to the top of it and found it did indeed connect with the SW ridge to the summit. On average 40-50 degree angled snow climb and then just a class 2 ridge. Great day racking up another winter 14er :)

1st 14er of 2009!
Climbed Grays from the winter trailhead with folks from 14erworld.com. Excellent conditions - blue bird skies, low to moderate winds, and cold temperatures. Snowshoes needed from the summer trailhead for about 1-2 miles - then ditched them in the nearby rock. Planned to attempt Torreys but toes got really cold. Overall a great day and a first in winter!

Whoa the Freaks!
Here's the deal, climb a few mountains, then go up Greys. Join the Colorado Mountain Club, take a couple of classes. Purchase the Freedom of the Hills. Then go up Greys again. Notice the hikers wearing sneakers, carrying their water in one hand and their cellphone in the other. Now go find yourself deep in the Never Summer Wilderness or better yet up near the Rawah Lakes. Shazam!!!

Good hike up Grays trail, down to the saddle and returned via Torrey's trail. Beautiful weather, a LOT of snow and ice.
