Steep
I'm pretty sure this had the steepest 1 mile portion I've ever done. They were pouring concrete at the top via helicopter, that was cool to watch

great hike
Grotto Mtn. was my 11 summit ever. Since 1993 been up it a few times, always fun, especially with first timers.

Fine outing in alpine like conditions.
Still lots of snow in the hills.

NW Scramble route
We left early in the morning to avoid the burning temperatures of the day. This route is a steep grind until you reach the ridge, then it's pleasant and scenic hiking/scrambling to the summit. We managed to find the window formation just below the summit slopes - very cool!

Scramble Route ACC
Good day out. Sun, rain, hail and still a fine view from the summit. Needed a good training day out. Fit the bill.
Went up a small switchback trail leading up to the climbing area about half way up. Then found a weakness by following the base of the cliffs, then proceeded to the summit. Descended via scramble route. Long day, although the 11am start probably didn't help. Beautiful sunset from the summit!

ACC scrambles route
This hike is STEEP! I thought it was never going to end in the forest. Fortunately, it was a nice day and we got a great view from the summit. A nice day is an understatement, it felt like +10 C, sunny, no clouds and only a slight wind as we were heading back.
Really fun to do in the spring. There are many ways to go up, one can go to the Bataan rock climbing area, circle around the cliff bands and go straight up from there too. Been on this mountain 4-5 times now.
Route Climbed: Grotto Scramble Traverse Date Climbed: April, 2004
I have done the full traverse twice, once along the 2nd time with wife and dog. The first go back in 2003 was early in the season, I strapped on my crampons and knocked out 1100' straight up hooking into the southwest ridge that leads to the summit. It was cold and windy at the top, even a little stormy. There is a summit register. I then descended by traversing west towards Cougar Canyon (Northwest Route). This route affords you great views of Lady Macdonald's summit ridge. Basically this trip formed a triangle circuit, giving one a great ridge hike at 8500' with dangerous cornices on your right. Saw no humans in 2003 or 2004. It is quiet all around this early in the season.
Route Climbed: Northeast route (ACC) Date Climbed: Nov 1997, Dec 1999, June 200
Excellent conditioning hike. The switch backs make for an easier time. Trail is slippery when wet. Its steepness can be tough on the knees. This hike has been both a grunt and a pleasure depending on the weather. Nice views to the north east once you reach the ridge.
