Cataract Gulch
Stormed out so spent the night in Lake City hoping for a break in the weather. After waiting for early morning showers to dissipate, I had a good hike and summit, scrambling up the scree slope on the right and skirting willows to the west on the descent. The "ridge" looks cool, but is truly easy and I didn't feel it was really exposed IMHO. Serenaded by coyotes around Cataract Lake. No other climbers, glad to get up & down under 6 hours.

Afternoon hike
Got a late 2pm start and snuck my way to the top between afternoon storms.
A quick run to the summit via South Ridge from Cataract Gulch TH. Nice views on the approach, impressive North Face.

Cataract Gulch
It was an absolutely gorgeous day. One of those rare late fall days that make your glad you're part of.
But my hiking partner was a sloth from hell. She actually ruined most of the day.

Cataract Gulch
Up the standard route and down the NE side. The latter looks shorter, and some good game trails make the bushwhack reasonable, but I'm not sure it saves much time. Trip report.
Half and "Quarter" from Cataract Gulch, second time up this peak. Ascended NE Ridge and descended Standard Route. With Brian and Steve.

Felt like a long long hike. I did not bring my GPS, but believe that more than 14,7 miles described by Roach.
Duchess did great. Mostly class 1 on trail, little short fun along the ridge just below the summit.
We got completely soaked on the way up - it rained the whole night and when hiking through willows, we got so soaked.
Wanted to go onto 1/4 Peak but clouds/drizzle/thunder (and the fact we got soaked wet the day before twice) made us return back to the car.
Made it up 13164 though... (the weather got little better for a while)
Hiked up Cataract Gulch to the junction with the Colorado Trail above Cataract lake. Trail becomes non-existent from here to the peak. We scrambled up a short section of the cliff band to cut some mileage. From the summit we descended off the east ridge, x-c hiked down the drainage back to the trail just below Cataract Lake. Quiet and scenic area but much longer (GPS said 16 miles) than it said in Roach's 13ers book.

The mountain itself was boring as shit. Even the 'hourglass' ridge was a huge disappointment. BUT...the hike in was astounding! Exceptionally beautiful. Hiked 13,184 and 12,990 as well. The sunset was to die for and I saw 3 moose!
A great fall day.

Standard route ridge traverse
Climbed this peak with Eric and Chris. Nice day beautiful hike. Traverse to peak was fun and challenging. Probably a little under rated with significant exposure in my opinion. Great summit.

Three quarters
Did the combo of Half & "Quarter" from Cataract Gulch TH.
9/27/08 - Backpacked to Cataract Lake and climbed UN 13164 and then Half Peak via its south ridge. Half Peak was my 400th ranked Colorado 13er. Only 184 more to go! We reached the summit at around 10:30, heard a distant grumbling of thunder, and chose not to stay and celebrate with the wine we'd brought because of the impending weather. Descended the northeast ridge. As soon as we began the descent, my hair was standing up and I could feel little electrical shocks on my body. We practically RAN down the initial 3rd class part of the ridge and hauled a$$ back to camp (where we of course drank that wine)!
1/25/2015 - Winter ascent in good conditions. Up Cataract Gulch, over the divide, then up the south ridge. Had to traverse one scary slope for 50ft en route to the ridge, good snow but big consequences if it went. Lots of effort required. 13 hours car to car.
A memorable trip as I did a face plant in the talus on the way back to the trailhead. What a bloody mess but managed to hike the 4 miles back to the car and then a trip to Lake City emergency center - nice people in the medical center - dr was awesome - got me in quick and did the xray - luckily no broken bones just swelling and black and blue!!
